Table Talk

BY Mike S Apostol

Monday, May 9 is an important day for all Filipinos. Once in every three years, Filipinos are given a chance to draw the course of the country’s future. Many times we failed to choose the right course, and the country underwent all trials of hardship.  One reason was, for the past 7 decades, the Philippines has chosen a president only from the Visayas and Luzon, but, never from Mindanao. As an offshoot if you compare the development and progress of Mindanao against Luzon, the difference is starkly striking. Almost all roads and bridges in Luzon are concreted. Their government infrastructures are inplaced and complete  and almost all of Luzon’s provinces and barangays are linked with with concrete highways.

Mindanao has been neglected all these years because even at the Senate, we have but a few from Mindanao to fight for a bigger infrastructure budget but upon approval they are always outvoted. It needs someone powerful enough to order the release of budgets for infrastructure, powerful enough like a President to get things done and for the country’s finance officials to tow the line for the President.

On Monday, go out and vote and show your concern for Mindanao. We have a popular presidential candidate from Mindanao, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte. Mindanao should support him for Mindanao’s sake. Let Mindanao be the catalyst for change. This is our only chance to unshackle us from neglect and go forward to progress and peace.

The black propaganda against Mayor Duterte although in bad taste is part of the political game to gain mileage and advantage. This desperation and the crooked minds of dirty candidates who will use everything to win the Presidency.  Clearly too, they don’t want the President of the Republic to come from Mindanao and they don’t want Mindanao and her people to be unshackled from misery and poverty. They want Mindanao and her people to remain poor even with her rich natural resources that contributes to the bulk of the nation’s needs. They want inequality and injustice to continue to rear its ugly head over Mindanao and make us the perennial whipping boy of the Republic. This is insane.

Scoop: Be the catalyst to change the country and Mindanao. Vote for those whose hearts are for Mindanao and rebuke those who wish us to  remain mendicants and helpless in our own rich domain. Mindanao will survive for as long as her people will believe those who wanted to be the leader for a change. Agree or disagree.
