Table Talk

BY Mike S Apostol

It is not only the campaign of government officials urging people to go out and vote in yesterday’s election, but,as a matter of fact judging from voters comment, majority of them want change and they wantto be part of that “history in the making”. Indeed, the Filipino people are fed up with the  anomaly ridden governance of the present administration of President Simeon Benigno Aquino III. What is bad is, the president’s popularity has gone down to the gutters in a span of less than two years, when scam after scam began to surface allegedly committed by the members of his presidential circle and who are seemingly beyond the reach of the law. Concerned Filipinos agree that these erring presidential friends are under the protection of the President.

Not one of these alleged presidential friends were investigated and punished allegedly due to those charges of corruption and other anomalies. But, those, whom the president and his array of cohorts perceived as a political threat are clamped down instantly without the benefit of a real due process or hard facts and evidences to nail them justifiably that is down beyond reasonable doubt.

Some of those political opponents and potential presidents  are still languishing in detention, denying them the opportunity to do public service as legislators, a position vested by the Filipino people on them. But the irony is, like a “consuelo de bobo” from the president, those detained legislators continue to draw their salaries from people’s taxes.

One of the heaviest sins of the present administrationwas the alleged misuse of billions of pesos, mostly borrowed money from international lending institutions that were allegedly squandered by friends of the president in the guise of development assistance to various non-government  organizations (NGOs) and some local government units. Those responsible for the approval and release of these government development funds remained scot free and enjoying life because they are untouchables. Clearly President S. Benigno Aquino III’s waning popularity to the lowest, recently, is the selective use of justice in his administration.

Tactless presidential remarks are one cause of confusion in the country. The blatant abuse of prerogatives like, sending a legislator who is a presidential friend for a secret back-channeling mission to China, in aid of foreign policy, is usurping the function of the Legislative Department that authorizes the president as head of the Executive Department to act in behalf of the country in matters of Foreign Policy and Foreign Relations. Abuse of protocol by the present administration is an additional burden to the Filipino people once it fails. And this failure is taking its toll on the people today who are protesting in anger for change at the polls.

Should there be a change in the presidency after yesterday’s election, the winning  president is voted favorably into the presidency by  angry Filipinos. Majority of Filipinos are fed up with the antics of the administration by preaching one thing but doing the other thing. Filipinos are angry because the President, is punishing his political opponents and detractors but at the same time is so lenient and forgiving on the president’s friends. The obvious can be seen.

Scoop: All Filipinos welcome a change in our government and we cannot suffer more of inequality, injustice, selective justice, corruption, and confused Armed Forces of the Philippines. One Nation, One Flag and One Country, is now the cry of suffering Filipinos. Long Live the Philippines. Agree or disagree.
