Table Talk

The province of Zamboanga Del Sur for everyone to know operates her own provincial hospital fully complete with medical staff and hospital equipment and fully funded and supported by the province. The provincial hospital had just recently completed a spacious and well arranged parking area for the convenience of patients and their visitors and to ensure that there will be no parking obstruction to emergency medical incidents. The provincial government hospital also have private rooms and a few private suites for patients requiring medical privacy aside from the many free hospital wards. The hospital is still expanding a new wing to accommodate more patients and these facilities expansion is fully subsidized with provincial government funds. This is a vision come true of Governor Antonio “Tony” Cerilles for the province to have its own hospital to care for the medical needs of constituents without having to beg from the national government or from charitable groups and private institutions medical assistance which oftentimes comes late and need more requirement before it is approved. It is delaying medical relief to an ailing individual.

The provincial hospital is right now a 350-bed capacity, similar to Zamboanga City Medical Center (formerly Zamboanga General Hospital) and plans for additional beds is afoot after the hospital wing will be constructed and completed. The provincial hospital is located at the Provincial Government Complex in Barangay Dao, Pagadian City. It is a few meters from the main entrance to the Provincial Government Complex. The imposing building of the hospital looks like a “high end” private hospital one can see in cities but it has an exclusive advantage on the hospital’s location—  the view of the City of Pagadian from where it is located and the fresh and unpolluted mountain air of upland Barangay Dao. Competent medical staff and physicians with medical specialties are employed by the province of Zamboanga Del Sur. The provincial hospital is a wise use by Governor Cerilles of the province meager funds. An observer finds it hard to believe that amboanga Del Sur can do it considering the meager funds of the province but Governor Cerilles did it with sheer deep commitment to alleviate the province of decades old medical needs of its constituents. Governor Cerilles’ utilization of fiscal autonomy to Local Government Units (LGU) is worth emulating by neighboring cities and provinces.

The Zamboanga Del Sur Provincial Hospital was constructed following the abolition and transfer of the Aurora General Hospital, to the municipality of Aurora, Zamboanga Del Sur District 1, which has been noted to be a losing government proposition for many years. Aurora General Hospital operates on a multi-million yearly budget from the government for many years since it was operating and caters to a few patients mostly from Lanao Norte and Misamis Occidental, since Aurora Municipality is the nearest town from those provinces. Governor Cerilles decided to stop the losing operation of Aurora General   Hospital and opened up a provincial hospital in Barangay Dao, Pagadian City nearer to most of Zamboanga Del Sur municipalities for patients from those municipalities to avail of government medical and hospital assistance. On the vast site of the abolished  Aurora General Hospital,  Cerilles instead opened up The Zamboanga Del Sur Provincial Agricultural School with course in Agriculture that is TESDA accredited. The Zamboanga Del Sur Provincial Agricultural School has at least 700 student enrolees coming from the outlaying municipalities of the province and some from as far as Lanao Norte and Misamis Occidental.

In a casual conversation the other night at Lobby Bar, Garden Orchid Hotel in Zamboanga City, with newly appointed TESDA Commissioner and Labor Leader Mr. Jose “Joe” Suan, who happened to to be Table Talk’s law school classmate, he said that all courses at the Zamboanga Del Sur Agricultural School are TESDA accredited and an excellent idea of Governor Cerilles in converting the vast Auroral General Hospital area into a productive venture by makin part of the hospital area into an agricultural farm for agriculture students and a demonstration farm of Governor Cerilles, brainchild, the internationally known and awarded “Gabung-Gabung Cassava Organic Fertilizer farming”. The result of the “Gabung-Gabung Cassava organic fertilizer Farming” is impressive where a few thousand square meters of cassava root crop farm, yielded tons of produce. Many farmers in the province have availed or availing of planting the cassava variety of Governor Cerilles.

Scoop: When will Zamboanga City organize a city hospital fully run and supported by the City Government of Zamboanga? This is an excellent idea to relieve some of the medical burdens of national government-run hospitals under the Regional Health Office (RHO) in the city. Besides, the many nursing graduates of the city will be given employment because some of those nursing graduates  are working abroad as medical aides and domestic workers. It is undignified after spending so many thousands of  pesos to graduate as “nurses” in Zamboanga City. You may agree or disagree.
