Table Talk

BY Mike S Apostol

Thousands of drug users across the country adhered to the call of the government to stop using dangerous and addicting drugs  and thousands more should have volunteered to reform especially those who came from respected families if the word “surrender” has not been used. Manybelieved that the word “surrender” is used for beleaguered criminals or lawless elements and rebels who fought the government and many drug users and addicts believe that they are not surrendering and going back to the folds of the law. They are sick and needed rehabilitation with the help of the government.

In Zamboanga Del Sur, Governor Antonio “Tony” Cerilles’ campaign against dangerous drugs has always been his advocacy, since he was still a congressman, long before Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Roa Duterte became President of the Republic and aggressivly implemented his campaign promise to rid the Philippines of this drug menace. Scores have lost their lives in the country for resisting arrest. Likewise in Zamboanga Del Sur, ailies of Governor Cerilles, mostly local government officials who are with the Governor in his fight against dangerous drug use were victims of harassments and sometimes harm, including Cerilles. Worst, they are all subjected to “black propaganda” from alleged drug lords in the province and “turning the tab” on the drug busters. This is indeed ridiculous.

In my hometown of Lapuyan, Zamboanga Del Sur, two days ago, Table Talk brought to the police station relatives who are in the list of drug users for profiling and documentation to free them from suspicion and out of the police drug users list. Table Talk made it clear to the Chief of Police that I brought them for documentation not to surrender like rebels and also to save the family from embarrassment.

Had I told my relatives to surrender not one of them will go with me because they said we have no fought the government and no “firearms” to surrender. We just want to change and reform. This is revealing and perhaps this is the thinking of all suspected drug users. They just wanted to change and reform and not surrender to government for some crimes and criminality.

The other day in Tukuran Municipality in Zamboanga Del Sur, allegedly seven suspected drug users and pushers were neutralized by the local police and almost a thousand suspected drug users volunteered to go the police station for profiling and documentation. No word of surrender was allegedly used. Maybe had the word “surrender” was used more civilians will resist arrest and probably die.

Scoop:Table Talk suggests that the Philippine National Police (PNP), the lead agency on this anti-drug operation,  must review and study the impact on the word “surrender” to entice suspected drug users to change and reform and not challenge their wayward thinking as drug users. Agree or disagree.
