Heroism not only comes from bravery, but also from extraordinary feat. Not all Filipinos has it and can do it. A Filipina lass from Barangay Mampang, Zamboanga City brought new honor to the whole country, inspired all Filipinos and united us. After 20 years of waiting and preparations, our country’s patience paid off with an elusive silver medal, that not all nations of the world can have. Weightlifting is not a popular event in the Philippines like basketball or boxing, but it has opened the eyes of almost all people of the world that some Filipinos, though tiny and short, is as strong if not stronger,  than most human giants coming from rich and industrialized nations that can afford to subsidize expensive practice gadgets and huge preparation expenses for their weightlifters. It took one Filipina to stun the world for being able to lift cleanly an object, perhaps twice heavier than her body weight. An amazing feat that brought pride to all Filipinos by a “probinsyana”, whose greatest asset is her God-given physique and her trust in God.

News account revealed in a picture, where Olympian weightlifting silver medalist Hidilyn Diaz used for her daily physical practice. It shows a makeshift gym beside their house in Mampang. It has no modern practice gadget or paraphernalia but only posters to cover the hole of her gym’s old wooden wall and a one unit of almost rusting hand lifting weights lying on the old concrete floor. This was her place of practice since she was 9 years old. But her love to be a champion did not discourage her or to ask for more. Unlike the practice gym of other champions, that is better than an average Filipino family home. Hidilyn Diaz gym will show the world that “when there’s a will, there’s a way” to be a champion even in your backyard. A Nigerian marathon Olympics gold medalist, who came from the hinterlands of Nigeria, practices daily by running up the mountains near his village and not in a rubberized oval in a sports complex like marathoners from America, Russia, China, Japan and Europe but beat them all in a past Olympic games held somewhere in Europe.

Hidilyn Diaz will come home to Mampang a millionaire as an incentive from the Olympics Committee and the Philippine National Government and from the City of Zamboanga. It is more than enough for her and her family or build a new practice gym for her use in preparation for the next Olympic Games said to be held in Tokyo, Japan, a few years from now. This time she can aim for the Olympic Gold Medal. Provided however, she will not be tempted to join politics, because of her popularity in Zamboanga City. “Aim high and fly high” and retire a gold medalist and number one world champion in weightlifting. This is the best gift you can bestow to Zamboanga City and our country and also, perhaps, this is what our Heavenly Father wants you to be.

To win in the Olympic Games is something precious and prestigious, because it is a contest of all nations and nationalities of the world. Any individual who will be a world champion in the Olympics is a “champion of the world”. And the nation the Olympic champion represents shares that pride and inspires the nation. The feeling is priceless and serves as an inspiration to the country’s youth. For one reason or another, if you are an athletic champion, don’t waste it and join politics. Because in a political contest, it has different set  of rules and objectives far different in purpose and practice from the Olympics. Besides, an Olympian Champion is treated like a demigod but a successful politician is sometimes treated with disdain and doubt.

Scoop:Olympics boxing silver medalist popularly called “Onyok”, could have been a gold medalist in the Olympics boxing event. But, “Onyok” destroyed his potentials by joining politics and the entertainment world of movies. This is very sad for a “champion of the world”, he lost a rare chance to make all Filipinos proud. He might have landed in the “halls of fame” but it could have been sweeter if he is in the hearts of all Filipinos. Agree or disagree.
