Table Talk

BY Mike S Apostol

The first mall in Zamboanga city, Mindpro Citimall, is now a Shoemart (SM) property, the country’s largest chain of malls whose branches are found in almost all cities of the country and now in Zamboanga City. The City Government must not block development but assist investors through tax holiday and easy business documents processing. Investors, domestic and foreign,  will appreciate if a city is business friendly. Once Jolo, Sulu and Basilan will be free from the dreaded Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG), business climate in our area will greatly improve. No more spillover of terrorism and banditry and no more fear of kidnap-for-ransom from our investors who will be visiting Zamboanga City to prospect for new business ventures. SM’s entry to Zamboanga City will pave the way for more investments to come besides the advantage that city residents will have, like an atmosphere of friendly competition from other malls that will create a “price war”. The more malls the better because prices of commodities will be cheaper.

With the entry of the country’s chain of malls, public utilities like water distribution system, energy distribution, communication and internet facilities must also improve. There is a big difference in services and business transactions, if these utilities will also improve and expand their capabilities. Any overload on our existing public utilities will greatly affect business and public services to include income  generation of business establishments in the city. As an example, for every hour of “blackout” in our power services, will mean hundreds of thousand pesos losses by our banking institutions, malls and other business and additional thousands of pesos in expenses to run their generator sets. The effect will be a cycle that affect all forms of transaction. Same effect with disruption in our water services, the entire city will be affected and not only the business centers. The cost and effect of disruption of our water and energy utilities have the same gravity in terms of financial losses and physical stress.

Come to think of it, why did it take so long for the country’s chain of malls to arrive in Zamboanga City? why only now with the administration of Mayor Maria Isabelle “Beng” climaco? Why were the country’c chain of malls, like SM and KCC did not bother to open up their branches in Zamboanga City during the past administration before City Mayor Beng Climaco? Is it true that our local businessmen were blocking the entry of malls in the city through the City council and the City Mayors of past administration? It was only Mayor Beng Climaco that broke the monopoly of trading in Zamboanga City.

Reports reaching Table Talk from customers patronizing KCC Mall reveal that grocery items, livestocks and canned goods are not anymore competitive with other malls and grocery outlets in the city because KCC has increased their prices. Many are patronizing back the Yubenco Mall which is found almost in all barangays in the city that offers cheaper selling prices and so with other convenience stores in the city. KCC was not able to maintain the cheap prices of their commodities like when they newly opened up in Zamboanga, according to many customers.

Scoop: The City Council should adopt quality City Ordinances to open up Zamboanga City to more business investors. Tax havens and other perks for business investors like Olongapo City, Davao and Cagayan De Oro cities and practically all cities of the country are adopting ways and measures to court investors to come to their city. Zamboanga City is now ready to host and accept investors because peace and order in the country is greatly improving with President Rodrigo Roa Duterte. Agree or disagree.
