Table Talk

BY Mike S Apostol

The Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) said it very clear, publicly through a spokesman, a certain Misaya, that they are ready for the all-out offensive of the military and threatened on the sideline that 1,000 ASG Jihadists are ready to attack communities as part of their “holy war” and are still recruiting other Muslim believers to join their cause. At first glance, it is an alarming threat, but since national and local government officials are on top of the situation, many believe it cannot happen. But the latest bomb explosion in Davao City, hometown of the president, that left 15 innocent Davao residents dead and 65 others wounded, makes one think twice. No doubt, President Rodrigo Duterte is on top of the situation, and likewise  some of his newly appointed military officers tasked to quash rebellion. But what about those “old sea dogs” in the military who have established close camaraderie with local government officials in Jolo, Sulu and Basilan, are they wholeheartedly supporting President Duterte’s war against lawlessness in the South?

Reports reaching Table Talk that ASG members come and go in Zamboanga City for R&R (rest and relax), after months in the jungles like government soldiers after an operation or may be some ASG are in the city to scout their potential kidnap victim. From the same source, an active police officer revealed in a radio interview over FM Radio Brigada that the police cannot effect arrest because there is no warrant. This is ridiculous. The local police on his personal revelation recognized criminals and notorious ASG bandits at that inside the city, although did not commit any breach of the law, while inside the city, needed a “warrant of Arrest” to apprehend known criminals. Will that police officer please show us the particular law and what article and section of the law that says otherwise on the apprehension of a known criminal that they see? Is there an amendment to our “Criminal Procedures”?

Zamboanga City residents, city officials and police and military authorities should double their efforts in securing the city from lawless elements, especially now that the government is on he offensive against the ASG. There is always a spill over of bloody incidents in the city, because almost all the lawless elements, MNLF, MILF and ASG know by heart the terrain of Zamboanga City which has been open to all of them these many past years since the start of the Marcos sponsored “Tripoli Agreement” and other peace talks that followed. The terrains in Jolo and Basilan have  never been opened to our military ever since, so every military operation our soldiers are always disadvantaged in their operation even today. One thing wrong, our national government, out of pride, we never request for American assistance in intelligence gathering, when American sophisticated intelligence networks and ultra modern technology is just in our doorsteps in Zamboanga City.

Time to turn the tables against the lawless elements to safeguard the lives and properties of all citizens in Zamboanga City. But, also time to swallow our pride and request for American intelligence assistance. American Intelligence network is just waiting for President Duterte, and Mayor Beng Climaco to request for intelligence assistance, and we know that Americans are much willing to extend assistance because they also have interest to protect aside from ours. Americans know what is happening but they cannot meddle because of the sad experience of Mamasapano masacre, when the Philippines requested for air assistance but once given by the Americans, they became the culprit when Philippine government forces and national officials panicked because of an error of judgement and when badly defeated they began looking whom to blame. The American friendly assistance was the “Philippine scapegoat” of mediocrity.

Scoop: Nobody wins against the government without popular public support. Republics losses a country when rebels have the popular support of the population, like Cuba, when rebel Fidel Castro supported by Cubans rallied behind him to topple the government of Juan de Batista. Ngu Den Diem of Vietnam was toppled by Nguyen Kao Ky and years .latter Nguyen Kao Ky was defeated by Ho Chi Minh by popular communist people support. Communist Rebel Mao Tse Tung conquered the whole of China by support of the people known as the Red Army and caused China’s General Chiang Kai Shek to flee and occupy the island of Formosa now called Taiwan. Philippine strongman Ferdinand E, Marcos fled the country and proceeded to  Hawaii because of People Power. Without the full support of all Filipinos in Mindanao,  Mindanao will remain to be part of the Philippines and can never be separated. You may Agree or disagree.
