TODAY’S MANNA

BY Berlie G. Yap

“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.”(Josh. 1:8, ESV)

The Bible is the only book, in the whole wide world and throughout history, which influencescountless of people and literally in every single generation. It is also the oldest book and, in fact, the most read. Folks, the Bible is not just an ordinary book, it is the very Word of God. Thus, if you will read it, it’s as if you heard God personally.

It has the power to change lives. Accordingly, when Viking marauders raided countries like the Greenland and the rest of the Scandinavia, they hostageChristian women and enslaved them, to keep their homes, especially their children, when they would go to loot overseas. Now, while the fathers performed their evil endeavors, these slave women would teach Christian values and the Bible to the children.

It is a historical fact: just in a span of three generations, these savage peoples were transformed dramatically by the power of God. The brute-like warriors were changed then by the Holy Spirit to be mild and loving.Jesus said, “Man does not live by bread alone but by every Word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” (Matt 4:4) We don’t just survive by striving our hardest. We needthe guidanceof God. The Bible is God’s map, in our journey, and through itwe never can be lost!Such is a guarantee.

There is a common mistake though, in our homes. We have Bibles, but we only display them inside our shelves. Dustscannot benefit the Holy Scripture. Rather, the potential power of the Word of God is released when it is read. Now, let me share. There are four ways how to receive Bible—by reading, by studying, by meditating & by practicing its values.

Let’s discuss the first—READING.The content of the Bible is spiritual. Even if you don’t understand its lines, but if you will read them, they will go straight to your soul, and will satisfy your inner being. The Word of God is like a pure milk to an infant. Well, when you feed an infant, he doesn’t argue or reason why you give him a milk, than rice. He just simply would take itin his pure innocence. In fact, he sucksthe milk without complaining. Then he grows. Read the Bible!

Second, STUDYING.It is still reading, but at this time you will use pen, paper and notebook—to jot truths and important points. In this part, you will surely learn. It won’t just be the ministers who ought to study. Everyone must, for his learning and personal growth. By studying the Bible, your mind is gradually opened by God to His truth. When you will KNOW the truth, the truth will set you free.

It is the knowledge of the truth which is thePOWER. Truth itself is ineffective. You will have to know the truth first. Like a dynamite, unless it is lit, it can’t create any explosions.“Study to show yourself approved to God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed. Rightly dividing the Word of truth.” (2 Tim 2:15). When you study the Bible, God will approve you and you won’t be embarrassed then in life.

Third, MEDITATING.It involves pondering, as you read the Scriptures. When a cow grazes,in a pasture, it pauses some moments, then it swallows the grass. Its actions seem to be thinking deep while it eats the grass. Such is how the meditation of the Word, you pause and ponder. You will think deep, as you savor the sweetness of its content. “Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the ungodly…but his delight is in the law of the Lord. And in his law he meditates day and night.” (Psalm 1:1-2)

Lastly, APPLYING.Application is as well very crucial. The Lord said that we must not just beHEARERS but DOERS of the Word. Faith without action is dead. There was this story. A man kept a parrot. Every time guestswould pay him visits, they would always be impressed, because the parrot had the ability to greet them lines like, GOOD MORNING.

It was something a plusfactor to the owner. But the parrot would still greet guests good morning, even if it was alreadyan afternoon or a nighttime. Similarly, application is very important, mere learning is not enough. Head knowledge puffs up. Thus, it is the heart, which is the one that needs to be filled.
