KAKAMPI MO ANG BATAS

BY Atty. BATAS MAURICIO

LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “…I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior,  who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth... Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or disputing...” (2 Timothy 1:4-8, the Holy Bible).

EDSA 1 & 2 WERE POWER GRABS WHICH VIOLATED THE BIBLE: Why is it that despite the two EDSA power grabs Filipinos have already experienced, the country has remained poor and many are still having greatly difficult and impoverished lives almost everywhere in the Philippines? The answer is that, those power grabs, euphemistically called “people power bloodless revolutions”, were actually  anti-Biblical.

And because they were anti-Biblical, those two EDSA events which saw a very small number of the population kicking out duly-elected leaders with the help of equally-rebellious tacticians from the United States, brought down the wrath and the curses of God and of the Bible on all Filipinos.

Generations after generations of Filipinos will suffer as a consequence of these rebellions. Because of those uprisings, Filipinos will continue to be governed by rebellious and therefore corrupt and immoral leaders. As a consequence, the life of many will continue to slide down, with the poor becoming poorer, with no hope ever of turning their lives around.

EDSA 1 & 2 BROUGHT CURSES TO RP AND FILIPINOS: The Biblical commands that prohibit rebellion against leaders are Romans 13:1-2, Hebrews 13:17, Titus 2:9, and 1 Peter 2:13-18.  Romans 13:1-2 says: “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves…”

1 Peter 2:13-18 on the other says: “Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human authority: whether to the emperor, as the supreme authority, or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right.  For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people.

“Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God’s slaves. Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor. Slaves, in reverent fear of God submit yourselves to your masters, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh…”

EDSA 1 & 2, ACTS OF DEFIANCE AGAINST GOD: Then, Titus 2:9 commands: “Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them,  and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive…”

Hebrews 13:17-18 entreats everyone: “Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you…”

Careful note must be made of the fact that any defiance of leaders is treated by these Biblical verses as a defiance of God, meriting punishment from God Himself. The only thing that citizens can do if their leaders are wayward is to pray for them, as 2 Timothy 1:4-8 commands. Unless Filipinos realize the folly of EDSA 1 and 2 and make amends, God’s curse will forever be with us.
