TODAY’S MANNA

BY Berlie G. Yap

“Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you.” (Ps. 63:3, ESV)

At least, there were people who were kind to you in the past and they hence partly made you to what YOU ARE today! They might be your mother, your friends, your neighbor, your college professor or a tryke driver, who patiently waited you outside your office, to drive you home on your overtime schedules. Their kindness was like a bridge which brought you to where you are now. In as far as they are concerned, their goodness to you is now repaid because of your personal success.

Time now also for you to sow your own way of kindness to others, because what we plant today is what we shall also harvest in the future. A holy man remarked, “One plants a wind, he later harvested a storm”. Plant a kernel of goodness to somebody, and you can harvest goodness back to you, and to your posterity, in a manifold way.

There are plenty good lines about kindness, here is a piece and is very beautiful. “A good character is the best tombstone. Those who loved you and were helped by you will remember you when forget-me-nots have withered. Carve your name on hearts, not on marble.” (Charles H. Spurgeon)

People hate rudeness. If you have such, it is a guarantee—a 100% guarantee, that others also dislike you, including your dogs and cats. Bad people seem to emit bad carbon, like a skunk, from their bodies that canbecome unlikely traces wherever they go. Thus, people just simply disdain them.

On the other hand, good persons are also like a honey which naturally attracts favors from others. Shops whose either salesladies or cashiers are bad, chances are customers won’t or never come back anymore there to buy. One piece of advice, owners check-out your personnel. And encourage them to be nice. A good smile can change everything, as you impress your others when you get along with them. Isn’t it?

A couple of years ago, I went to Lakewood, Zamboanga del Sur to officiate a wedding. Pressured and not very familiar of the place, I felt helpless to look for a type-writer for the marriage certificate of the couple. And suddenly, God must have sent an angel, in human form, to help me. I embarked a Van from the hotel/resort, where I was housed, to the town proper to find the needed type-writer.

Lakewood is a small town where, I guess, anybodyknows everybody. A woman sitting next to me felt my anxiety and asked if I was looking for something. Make long story short, she brought me to their house. Together with her husband they sought a type-writerfor me. That woman saved my day!

She and her husband are farmers. I needless to know details but I believe our good God shall repay them His way. Merciful people are also given mercies by the almighty. I resolve thus years ago, by God’s grace, that when a chance crosses my way to dispense a degree of kindness, I mustn’t hesitate. Kindness pays my friend.

An unknown author said, “It’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice.” When you show kindness, I encourage, don’t do to parade, but rather sincerely give them to the needy. Our sole intention should only be to become a blessing to others, and not to draw human praises.

The Good Samaritan in the aged story had no name even. The Lord chose not to show his face in the parable. His description is only a generic THE GOOD SAMARITAN. He was faceless and nameless, but his story transcends cultures, nationality and continents. His story is always equaled to acts of kindness and true humanity.

Here is the real score, in all of us there lies within a good character of GOONESS that must be released. Every human being, though not perfect, is born inherently good. However, that goodness must be expressed because other forces do also try or squeeze us to be something else.
