BY Berlie G. Yap

“When he saw the crowds, he HAD COMPASSION FOR THEM, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” (Matt. 9:36, ESV)

The Lord is merciful; there were those who followed Him and never gave-up to listen to his teaching, such even on extended days. Thus, he was moved with compassion to see their tenacity. He even performed miracles to them and healed their diseases. In like manner, God almighty wanted us to walk with gracious hearts, especially to the poor, the weak and the susceptible.

The Lord encouraged us to help more those who cannot repay us. “But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, 14 and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just.” (Lk. 14:13-14, ESV)

It has been raining almost every day within this week. There were some papers which I needed to submit to the City Civil Registrar yesterday—March 9, thus I had the chance to pass a friend, in a nearby office of the PCSO. Its regional manager, Mr. Raul Regondola, is a close friend for some years already. I personally call him Bro. Raul. Usually, if I’m freer, I’d pay him visits. Luckily, yesterday wasn’t a much busier office day to my friend.

I stayed with him for at least 30 minutes. Along he shared to me about this experience he had, when he was assigned in Cagayan de Oro City almost 4 years ago. He was invited to teach to a local university, and instead to get his salary, he gave it to the school again to help the less fortunate students, for their tuitions.

He told me that he was able to help 15 students! Well, the man was re-sent back to Zamboanga City last year. But accordingly he continued to help those same students, though he is already re-assigned here. Then the pay-off time, five of the students will already graduate at the end of this month. They too are taking commercial courses, like Bro. Raul.

I asked the permission of my friend to scribble some lines in this page. He grew-up also in difficulties. He needed to wade his studies, young as during his high school days. He applied for a scholarship to ZAEC (UZ now). God must be gracious that he was given such scholarship, from high school, until he finished in college.

Because he was also good in his academics, when he applied for work, he usually landed to better jobs until he transferred to PCSO. He told me, he is always reminded of his humble beginning. Every time he can see a needy boy, his heart is pricked, so that in his small ways, he wanted ever since to help others. The man is grateful to the God-given opportunities which came along his way in the past.

Graciousness is a godly character. Such is innate to every human being in the planet. Remember, all of us are created in the image and likeness of God. Although sin has ruined the nature of God inside our being, but some traces remain to be there still. One of those is mercy, or simply pity to others.

Anytime we see a needy persons, let us not turn our backs away from them. Remember, it will always be better to help others, than us the one which would have to plea for help. We can help in many ways, so long as we have the capacity. Please when you help the needy, always do them as not to please others. Dispense mercy with all of your heart, without any string attaches. If you can do such, you glorify the Lord.

“Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.” (Matt. 5:7, ESV) What goes around, comes around, ain’t it? We help others today, and without thinking one day also, we will be helped! Then on such a time, we can feel as well how it is to be down—who needs somebody to pull us up. Be happy to lend a hand, do them with all of your heart. God shall take care of you and of your future. The Father is a GOOD God and a just Judge!
