“Like the nations that the LORD makes to perish before you, so shall you perish, because you would not obey the voice of the LORD your God.” (Duet. 8:20, ESV)

Many think that their disobedience is a sign of toughness and superiority. But little do they know that such is instead a symptom of a sick character, inside their souls. Thus, it is always imperative for children to obey their parents in the Lord, and not to disobey their godly rules.

“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. ‘Honor your father and mother’ (this is the first commandment with a promise), ‘that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.’” (Eph. 6:1-3, ESV) The passage is a time honored reminder for children to obey their parents, because such has an attached blessing from God.

We live in a generation where different destructions follow after our children, on a daily basis. It behooves us parents to always cover them with prayers. Think about it, we only have, the most, four hours with them. Usually this happens when they reach home from school and when they are pretty tired already.

On the other hand, they are also exposed to their friends more than 8 hours every day. So, the first thing which we are to consider is what kind of friends or influences does our children has, when they are away from our homes. Did you hear about those four pairs of teens, caught by their barangay officials, committing sexual congress inside an abandoned house?

Personally, when I heard that news, it also boggled my mind if how those naïve kids were able to do those horrible acts! I thought if they were taught real values by their parents in their homes. Maybe, the free access nowadays of all sorts of media have aroused their curiosity to experiment on unlikely things.

Admittedly, the adolescent stage of any youth is the more sensitive portion of his growth. It is the same stage where he questions a lot, and even to the extent of he becomes willing to take the necessary risks, just to be able to experience the taste of what he wants to try. Hence, it is important for parents to critically guide their children, in their teenage level.

I mentioned about daily prayer; now, let me add the relevance of teaching them the word of God. “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” (Prov. 22:6, ESV) Bible verses are like an adhesive which will stick to the subconscious being of our children. Same scriptures will even help and guide them, along their personal trials. The Holy Spirit can quicken them to become a strong conviction inside their hearts.

Apparently, our age is bereft of the fear of God. Wrong values are presently permeating, or are readily available anytime via the internet, the minds of our youths. Think about this, teachers can even easily find either pornographic pictures or videos inside the smart phones of their high school students. Now where the latter, do you think, did acquire those? From the internet!

Thus, it will always be a wisdom to guide our children when they access the internet, because if we may just allow them to be exposed to these unchartered waters, it be us to regret at the last. It is us parents to set the standard in our homes. Discipline is biblical in origin. The Lord said that it is already equivalent to pushing our kids to perdition if we do not discipline them.

Besides, children are our own reflections. Others can see our personal character through the lives of our children. And like to a pliable branch of a tree, we ought to bend them to follow righteousness while they are still young. Remember we may break them if we will impose the necessary discipline when they are already old.

Do not worry to lose money, opportunities, privileges and other earthly or temporary things; but never afford to lose your children to the strong allures of this world. Our kids are our ultimate rewards in life. Besides, we also are only stewards of their precious lives. One day, God will take an accounting to how we raised them.
