TODAY’S MANNA

BY Berlie G. Yap

“So he brought the people down to the water. And the Lord said to Gideon, ‘Everyone who laps the water with his tongue, as a dog laps, you shall set by himself. Likewise, everyone who kneels down to drink.”’ (Judges 7:5, ESV)

The Old Testament contains ample of truths, and most of them do have spiritual meaning rather than purely literal stuffs. For example, the passage above was about a war time. God picked His soldiers, who were led then by Gideon. They were told to go to a river. Little did they know that they were only tested by God—He qualified His soldiers; the test was to how they would drink the water.

Due to their thirst, most of the people just plunged straight to the river, to drink. They were unmindful of their surrounding; each just managed to satisfy their present needs. Probably, they were denied of water for hours, thus their unusual reaction in the story. Albeit, from the crowd, there were those who were more careful.

Around 300 soldiers instead picked the water through their palms. They did the opposite to their companions’ style. They were more careful. They showed a soldier’s attitude. They were more behaved than the rest. Hence, God picked them to be the soldiers to defeat their enemies. They were insignificantly few, but through them God delivered His people.

The passage is about the principle of how God may promote our lives.“For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another.” (Ps. 75:6-7, KJV)I’ll share three points, as its spiritual meaning, out of the story. First, it speaks to hard work. People who are industrious are the ones who will surely be promoted by God. Such is a guarantee.

Lazy people can hardly develop their lives. God hates laziness. Being a sluggard is the number one hindrance to increase. There can be no improvement if one is indolent. Ladies, if you look for a future husband, consider his quality, if he is ahardworking man, because if he is lazy, you will one day go hungry. And worse, your future children will also go hungry. “A slack hand causes poverty, but the hand of the diligent makes rich.” (Prov. 10:4, ESV)

When God calls people, He always found them doing something. Whether David, he was tending his flock, or Peter, he was mending his nets—all of those whom God called for His glory, they were at least working. The Bible defines laziness. In fact, especially the book of Proverbs, has plenty of truths which deal the subject on laziness.

This is how King Solomon defines and illustrates laziness, “I passed by the field of a sluggard…I looked and received instruction. A LITTLE SLEEP, A LITTLE SLUMBER, A LITTLE FOLDING OF THE HANDS TO REST, and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man.” (Prov. 24:30-34, ESV)

The second, the passage above does also speak aboutour ability to improvise. It is our creativity to produce anything out from nothing. Ones, Moses was confronted with an ordeal. Before him was the Red Sea and behind him were the Egyptian soldiers who want the Israelites dead. He cried to God for help. God told him if what was in his hand.

The former replied that it was a rod. The Lord performed the miracle to divide the Red Sea through his rod.“Lift up your staff, and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, that the people of Israel may go through the sea on dry ground.” (Exo. 14:16, ESV)

The third, it speaks about readiness. “Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes.” (Matt. 24:46, ESV) God wants us to be ready all the time. Those who have a spirit of anticipation are the once who can quickly catch their needed breakthrough. Its reason is very simple—they are ready all the time.
