KAKAMPI MO ANG BATAS

BY Atty. BATAS MAURICIO

LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… Why do you persist in rebellion? Your whole head is injured, your whole heart afflicted. From the sole of your foot to the top of your head there is no soundness—only wounds and welts and open sores, not cleansed or bandaged or soothed with olive oil…” ( Isaiah 1:5-6, the Holy Bible).

BIGGER TRAGEDIES THAN DRUGS STRIKE RP, AND NOBODY CARES: Tragedies equal to, if not more than, what the drug menace and the criminality and lawlessness that such menace from illegal drugs have spawned among many Filipinos in the recent past, appear to have struck the Philippines anew in the last several days, and nobody but nobody even seemed to be alarmed.

Indeed, I am alarmed that no one is alarmed about these tragedies, heralded by two pieces of very disturbing news that got reported on May 10, 2017. Truly, these two pieces of news are real causes of alarm, which should have elicited reactions bordering on righteous indignation from all of us. But, no one seems to care.

This is sad, and this indifference among many of us on things like these may have been among the causes that have fueled these tragedies. Anyway, the first news pertains to the man from Quezon City who killed not only his live-in partner of 10 years with whom he has two children, but also the “other man” or the paramour of the woman, after the suspect caught the two of them—the live-in partner and her paramour—having wild sex right inside their own bedroom.

THE SCOURGE OF HIV/AIDS FROM WANTON SEX: The second piece of news focused on the spread of the dreaded HIV virus among all towns in Western Visayas, particularly in Iloilo City, according to a report from the Department of Health Region 6. HIV, as we all know, transforms into the deadly AIDS virus, now considered as one of the top killer diseases in the world.

What is troubling from this HIV report is the finding that the transmission of this virus, originally only from foreigners visiting the country and who indulge sex with our countrymen, is now made possible even among native Filipinos, more particularly those “men having sex with men” (and “women having sex with women”).

Latest figures on this show that there are now 41,315 Filipinos afflicted with HIV, and 1,667 of them come from Western Visayas (439 of these come from Iloilo City, 313 from Iloilo Province, 295 from Negros Occidental, 115 from Capiz, 72 from Antique, and 33 from Guimaras).

FIGHTING OFF THESE TRAGEDIES BY RETURNING TO GOD: These are tragic events of far reaching consequences, and are more dangerous and prejudicial in the long run on all Filipinos. A family that is strife-torn by the separation of the husband and wife will cause suffering not only on the husband and the wife, but more so on the children—who are bound to be scarred and psychologically disjointed for the rest of their lives.

The man or woman afflicted with HIV and AIDS on the other hand will cause suffering not only for themselves, but even on their families, friends, and associates, which would inevitably result in similarly scarring and psychologically disjointing not just all of them, but neighborhoods and entire communities as well.

Why are we, Filipinos, facing these tragedies at this point? The reason is that we have turned our backs on God, no longer listening to His Word, the Bible, and no longer obeying His commands. We have becomes subjects of evil, since we no longer live according to God’s direction and leading. We must return to God if we wish to stop tragedies coming upon our people.
