LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… Your rulers are rebels, partners with thieves; they all love bribes and chase after gifts…” (Isaiah 1:23, the Holy Bible).

ISIS IS WORLD’S WEALTHIEST GROUP, UN REPORT SAYS: Today, let us continue our little discourse in this column about the still to be quashed rebellion and invasion in Marawi City, perpetrated by Filipino and foreign terrorists who are now self-professed subjects of the international terror group called the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). The actual rebellion in Marawi City is underscored by the clearly modern and sophisticated weapons of the terrorists.

How did the ISIS manage to possess these modern and sophisticated weapons? Available government and media data tell us that even the United Nations is calling the ISIS as “the world’s wealthiest organization”. The UN claimed that it has gained so much money after it has conquered territories and, because of this, it became able to buy more modern weaponry and recruit more members.

In a report of the UN Secretary General dated January 29, 2016, it was revealed that ISIS derives income from operating conquered oil fields, from obtaining protection money from businesses, and profits from black market transactions. The UN said its estimates show that the ISIS raised some US$500 million in 2015 alone.

FOUR TERROR GROUPS IN RP UNITE UNDER ISIS: Because of this wealth and power of the ISIS, it managed to acquire more territories worldwide, and galvanize more militant action from other Islamic groups in the different parts of the globe. Reports indicate that these Islamic groups were enticed to engage in the commission of heinous crimes in their own regions in the name of ISIS, to gain its recognition and, of course, financial support.

This, apparently, was what happened with the Filipino terror groups and rebels in Mindanao. The same government data tend to show that in November 2014, Filipino terrorists have already subjected themselves to the control and authority of the ISIS caliphate, and were already taking orders from the ISIS.

At present, according to data from government lawyers, there are four groups that are now operating in Mindanao under the banner of the ISIS. They have established alliances to form a wilayat (or an ISIS province) in Southern Philippines.

HAPILON IS “EMIR” OF ISIS RP GROUPS: These four groups, government data show, are the following: the Abu Sayyaf Group from Basilan led by Isnilon Hapilon, the Ansarul Khilafa Philippines from Saranggani and Sultan Kudarat led by Mohammada Jaafar Maguid, the Maute Group from Lanao Del Sur led by Omar Maute, and the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters from the Liguashan Marsh, Maguindanao.

Previously, these groups existed and operated independently of one another, unmindful of each other. However, they formed an alliance           after all of them pledged alliance to the ISIS and expressed support for the establishment of a caliphate.

They were known to have been responsible for numerous bombings, assassinations, and kidnapping and extortion activities in the whole of Mindanao. Then, in 2016, Isnilon Hapilon was established as the emir or leader of all ISIS forces in the Philippines. Government data say that a June 21, 2016 video by the ISIS, Hapilon was named as “mujahid”, the leader of the Islamic State in the Philippines. We will try to have more of this next issue, God willing.
