LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God…” (2 Corinthians 9:12, the Holy Bible).

ROTARY AWARDS NIGHT HONORS ACHIEVERS: In my 13 years of being a Rotarian with the Rotary Club of Intramuros Manila under District 3810 of Rotary International, fate has always prevented me from attending its yearly awards night, where each and every Rotarian who served mankind so well with its world-famous “service above self” is honored and given due recognition.

But for District 3810’s awards night on June 30, 2017—which is being held just a day before new Rotary officers are to be ushered in as new Rotary leaders for Rotary Year 2017-2018—I prayed to God that I be allowed to attend and witness the proceedings.

Of course, there are a lot of achievements that District 3810 All Star Governor Ernest Yuyek and his All Star Presidents, including my own wife, former Judge Angelina Mauricio who is the All Star President of RC Intramuros, would truly be proud of and have to be celebrated and recognized in fitting ceremonies and that is reason enough for me to strive to attend, with God’s grace.

ROTARY DISTRICT 3810 SHINES BRIGHTLY THIS YEAR: Indeed, District 3810 under Yuyek’s governorship has a lot of reasons to hold an Awards Night. First, it contributed a whooping US$631,297.13 as Rotary Foundation donation—the biggest donation so far in the nearly 100 years history of the District, which is already celebrating its centennial year in 2019.

Then, District 3810 under Yuyek also improved its number one standing as the premier district in the Philippines for recruiting and maintaining the highest number of Rotarians in any given year. Then, it also appears to be the record holder among Philippine Rotary districts in the huge number of new clubs that were organized under his term through the untiring efforts of Senior Deputy Governor Oyie Valarao.

Together, Yuyek and Valarao chartered—that’s Rotary’s way of describing the putting up of a new club—about 15 clubs, and brought in new Rotarians numbering around 466, certainly a figure which is difficult to surpass in the coming Rotary Years. Valarao told me that she could have chartered more, if only Rotary leaders in charge of chartering clubs did not refuse hedge in accepting the other new clubs.

WITH “SERVICE ABOVE SELF”, ROTARIANS DESERVE TO BE HONORED: The fact is that, the awards that will be handed out by District 3810 are the only tangible expression of gratitude by a sitting District Governor like Governor Ernest for the cooperation and selfless dedication of the Rotarians who served with him for one year under the All Star Team.

Undeniably, Rotarians are mere volunteers who are not even paid even a single cent for their efforts that show “Rotary Serving Humanity”, who even had to spend their hard-earned money just to fulfill successfully projects aimed “service above self”.

Rotarians deserve to be honored and recognized.  Truly, Rotarians must always LEAD THE WAY as they REACH WITHIN TO EMBRACE HUMANITY, to confirm the age-old truth of ROTARY SERVING HUMANITY, and this entails giving importance to the Awards Night!
