NEXT ROTARY INTERNATIONAL PREXY, WIFE, COMING TO RP: Sakuki Tanaka, the president of Rotary International for Rotary Year of 2012-2013, and his wife, Kyoko, are arriving in the Philippines on Monday, 22 August 2011, to grace the 25th anniversary of the Rotary Community Corps (RCC), a Rotary-organized association whose members come from the poor and the marginalized.

The concept of an RCC was introduced in 1986 in the Philippines by Mat Caparas, the first Filipino president of RI, and was adopted two years later as a worldwide program of RI, aimed at improving the quality of life in villages, neighborhoods and communities. From the first RCC established in the Philippines, the program has since grown to over 7,000 RCCs all over the world.

Tanaka and Kyoko will grace the four-day RCC bandwagon from August 23 to 26, 2011, which will go from Bulacan to Manila to Iloilo, conducting seminars and doing site visits to existing RCCs. For additional queries, contact Past District Governor and RI Philippine chair Chit Lijauco at 0917-886-6181 or at chitlij@yahoo.com.

CONG. PEPING ON DRAGON BOAT ROW: Former Tarlac Rep. Jose “Peping” Cojuangco Jr. sent me this text message early Friday (August 19, 2011) regarding the controversy generated by the victory garnered in Tampa, Florida, USA of the Philippine Dragon Boat Federation (PDBF): “What is happening is really so sad.

“We have some athletes that won some minor events which their leaders through media have made people believe they won medals equivalent to the Olympic medals. Media through the PR hired by the same people have done such a terrific job that they convinced a great majority of the Filipino people, including the Philippine President himself.

“Now, many are taking advantage of the publicity by showering this group of minor winners with millions. The sad thing is these millions will end up in the hands of the PDBF leaders whom their own members are asking where all the money they have been collecting in the past have been going.

“DRAGON BOAT ROW A BLOW TO PHILIPPINE SPORTS”: “And inspite of the PDBF members’ demand to be shown the books, their leader have refused. So again, some crooks will get richer because we Filipinos continue to allow ourselves to be hoodwinked by our unscrupulous media.

“Another sad result of all this is the athletes who remained loyal to the rules of the International Olympic Committee and the Philippine Olympic Committee will receive nothing but have to suffer and watch while the rebel athletes and their crooked leaders receive all the accolades and the money.

“Nothing could be worse than the lesson that our athletes learned in this affair.  To top it all, the decent, hardworking sports leaders are now made to look like stupid officials who have done nothing for sports.”
