By Remedios F. Marmoleño

What happened in 1986 was a convergence of several factors:  Benigno Aquino had been killed; his widow was courageous enough to lay the murder at the feet of the dictator and to run in the election to challenge the dictator himself; the charismatic Cardinal Sin called on the citizens to rally for the cause of freedom; and the citizens responded even at the risk of their lives. Thus was the memorable People Power I carried out and the dictator and his family fled the country for the balmy clime of Hawaii.

While the present circumstances in our country are not there yet relative to the  Marcos dictatorship,  the way things are running we are on the way. And things will get worse rather than better if we do not assert our rights as citizens of a democratic republic. The people power assertion that will be made this time may not have the same convergence of factors that we saw in People Power I.

The drug war being pursued by this present government has the marks of a government that has no scruples about disregarding the rights of citizens. We need not go into the numbers – people (even teenagers) killed because they fought back ( nanlaban); people charged with affiliation  with the  drug trade in different capacities and put in detention or simply killed.

Beyond the pursuit of the drug war there is also the disturbing tendency of this government to chastise those who dare to question or criticize the modus operandi of the government.  This I find more serious than the police style of carrying out the drug war. I have no way of determining whether the nanlaban claim is true or not so we will have to give the benefit of the doubt to the police. However,  the attempt to reduce the budget of the CHR to P1.00 does not require any proof since the Speaker of the House himself made this public.

Another move that we should consider even more seriously is the attempt to file impeachment charges against the SC Chief Justice and the Ombudsman. This is not something that is hearsay since PRRD has made the threats public.

Let us consider carefully these quotes about freedom of speech:

“ [F]reedom demands that those in power allow others to think for themselves.”

“Those who begin coercive elimination of dissent soon find themselves exterminating dissenters.”
