Double standard on EJKs PDF Print E-mail

LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs...” (1 Timothy 6:10, the Holy Bible).

POLITICAL LOSERS WHO REFUSE TO ACCEPT DEFEAT BRING CURSES TO RP: Today, I am giving way to some perceptions coming from my younger brother, lawyer Leny Mauricio, a former newsman who is now a practicing lawyer  like me in the Philippines. These views on what is happening in the country at present were originally written and published by Leny in his Facebook account.

Here is one of them, which I translated into English from its original in Filipino: “What is the root of the dissension in politics in the Philippines? The root are the people who wouldn’t accept defeat, the losers who are instigating disorder so they can pursue their Plan B.

“So, whom should we blame if the Filipino nation becomes impoverished because of the low value of the peso relative to the dollar? These, no one else.” Indeed, in the Bible, losers who refuse to accept defeat are enemies of God, on account of their disobedience to God’s command for men to subject themselves to authorities. These losers are harbingers of God’s curses.

DOUBLE STANDARD ON EJKs: Here is the second article that Leny  wrote for his Facebook account, containing my English translations from his original Filipino article, on the matter of extrajudicial killings (EJKs): “ Where were these lawyers when EJKs were very rampant during AbNoy’s rule?

“Is it not a fact that the Philippines was ranked `worst’ by the Global Impunity Index for EJKs during AbNoy’s term? Did these lawyers do anything against EJKs (during the time of Abnoy?). This is the problem here. There is a double standard of looking at things. This is the reason why life in the Philippines has not really improved at all. Well...”

Yes, I can only agree. It cannot be denied that, as then Senator (and now Foreign Affairs Secretary) Alan Cayetano had been saying all along, there were more EJKs during the reign of the Aquino government, but not even a whimper was heard from the lawyers opposing EJKs now. Is this not double standard?

“TELL THAT TO YOUR BALDING BOSS”: On the human rights award granted to Liberal Party Sen. Leila De Lima for her supposed advocacy on fighting for the rights of others, here was how my brother, lawyer Leny Mauricio, looked at it, in his Facebook account: “Who gave the award? Liberal International.

“Who are the members (of Liberal International)? In Asia, the Liberal Party of the Philippines, of which De Lima is a member. Now, tell me, does the award have any credibility at all? Tell that to your balding boss.”

What this clarifies is that, colleagues in the same group were the ones who gave the supposed human rights award to the detained senator. If the award-giving body is allied with the awardee, it would not be surprising that they would be granting an award to one of their own kind. Oh well!
