BY Atty. BATAS MAULIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, ‘Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him’…” (Matthew 2:1-2, the Holy Bible).

CHRISTMAS MYSTERY III: JESUS WAS VISITED BY WISE MEN, NOT BY “THREE KINGS”: One of the more important narratives about Christmas pertains to the men referred to as “Magi from the East” who went to Bethlehem shortly Jesus was born. What was the reason why they went to Jesus, even if they had to travel from afar?

It is clear from the Bible itself that these wise men were not believers. They were not from Israel, but were from the east. And, for sure, they were not “three kings”, as some have been claiming through the ages. We also do not know their names, so that calling them Melchor, Gaspar and Balthazar had no basis at all.

According to the writings of those who researched on this, the wise men were no ordinary men, and instead were learned in the art of studying heavenly signs, particularly  the signs from the stars. Based on their appreciation of these signs, they learned that Israel was going to be the place where the “king of the Jews” would be born. That prompted them to go to that place.

WHY DID THE WISE MEN VISIT JESUS? As I see it, the visit by the Magi of Jesus was intended to impart important messages. The first was that, Jesus was recognized as the “king of the Jews”. But even then, Jesus was no ordinary king. He was “king” not only of the Jews or the Israelites, but of other people, or people from far away places like the wise men, as well.

Then, His birth was proclaimed and prophesied not only by the prophets of God in Israel, but even by learned men from other places, very much like the wise men who travelled assiduously to visit Him.

If we will pay closer attention, we will realize further that these wise men also brought gifts to Jesus. And the gifts were no ordinary presents. They were gold, incense, and myrrh, which indicate that the recipient was somebody truly great.

THE WISE MEN’S VISIT PROVED JESUS IS GOD: Most importantly, I am convinced that the visit of Jesus by the wise men constituted great proof that He is the God who came down to earth from heaven, in human likeness and form, with flesh and blood, and accepted in Himself the penalty for man’s grievous sinfulness. Fact is, their quest was based on divine signs, which clearly were from God.

Second, the wise men were guided in their long journey to find Jesus by a star. This was no accident, since no man, then and now, had the power to direct the movements of a star. Only God has the power to do this.

Third, the wise men travelled far, to worship Jesus. The Bible did not say why they worshipped Jesus when they finally saw Him but, then and now, worship is reserved only for God. If worship of Jesus was the intent of the wise men, this could only mean that they fully believed and accepted Jesus as God.
