LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “…  Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones.  In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men…” (Romans 1:26-27, the Holy Bible).

THEY MYSTERY OF “UN-NOK” AT THE CAGAYAN RIVER: This is a story from Ms. Edna Clavita Cababa, a client of mine from Aparri, Cagayan, relative to a shell fish which was known among Cagayanos as “un-nok” or “balinggasa”. According to Edna, this kind of a shell fish was harvested only from the banks of the Cagayan River that lie in the town of Lallo.

Ms. Edna told me that while “un-nok” was plentiful and was a major source of livelihood for the people of Lallo about ten to fifteen years ago, it can now hardly be found or harvested from the Cagayan River. It was as if “un-nok” deliberately made itself scarce or extinct from the Cagayan River.

Why did this happen? From the narrative of Ms. Edna, there was a time when many of the people who ate “un-nok” ten to fifteen years ago suffered bum stomach and appeared like they were hit by an epidemic of dysentery. After blaming “un-nok” for this ailment, people gathered all the “un-nok” they could lay their hands on from the Cagayan River, brought it to a hill, and burned them there. From that time on until now, no “un-nok” ever appeared in the river again!

“UN-NOK” AND ITS MESSAGE TO CAGAYAN AND THE WORLD: What is the message from this story of the shell fish known as “un-nok” from the Cagayan River? Simple: whatever mankind is eating from the soil, from the seas, or from the air, should be a cause for great thanksgiving for him towards God. All of these came from God’s goodness, and from His great love for all His creation, particularly mankind.

If, for any reason, these food sources give rise to any sickness or ailment or any other problem, the better part of prudence would be to simply refrain from harvesting or partaking of them in the meantime. It is not a good idea to be burning them, destroying them, or even cursing them. Man should not forget, even for one second, that all that he has been eating or partaking of came from the beneficence of God over which he should be grateful.

As Ephesians 5:20 of the Bible is saying, we must always give thanks to God for all things. This Biblical verse also establishes the rule that we must thank God always in the Name of Jesus. This way, we recognize God, and His great love and power over all of us.

Unfortunately, the problem with most Filipinos nowadays (and, it is clear, even with almost all the other peoples of the world) is that, they no longer recognize God. In their minds, hearts, souls, and spirits, many men and women have been rejecting the fact that everything in this world, including each one of them, were all mere creations of God.

And because they are now refusing to recognize God and His commands, they were left to wallow in sinfulness, in their evil thoughts, and in the humanly desires of the flesh. God allowed these people to become depraved, enjoying perversions in women-to-women relationships and men-to-men relationships, shunning the natural relations God instituted from the beginning of time.

Evil has become the controlling factor in the minds of many, so that there is no more hesitation for them to engage in corruption, moral depravity, and dastardly behavior in their day-to-day lives. This is totally unfortunate because these bring nothing but suffering, dissension, and rebuke in everything they do.
