TODAY’S MANNA

BY Berlie G. Yap

“Cain spoke to Abel his brother. And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him. Then the Lord said to Cain, ‘Where is Abel your brother?’ He said, ‘I do not know; am I my brother’s keeper?”’ (Gen. 4:8-9, ESV)

Often, news which we hear all over can easily distraught us; you may have already heard about that woman who was stabbed  37 times, inside a cemetery in Sta. Maria. According to the police, the frustrated homicide was a product of a robbery hold-up. Thankfully, the victim survived despite of the number of stab wounds she received.

Then a simple question one can absolutely ask: if what kind of mind did the robber have; how in the world did he stomach to hurt a harmless and a weak person—a woman at that! Let’s help to pray for the victim, for her speedy recovery and that she can obtain her needed justice. May the same robber who almost claimed the victim’s life pay the penalty of the crime which he committed!

God created man with a whole mind. By all means, our souls have the traces of that image and likeness of God, despite of the fall. Although sin has overrun the entire human race, there is still that part inside of him which fears God. That same faculty inside him is also the actual standard of morality in our broken world.

Only animals can hurt and to the extent of killing each other, just to survive. But man is not an animal. Human beings have reasons. Our rationale faculty is the red light which stops us to hurt our equals, let alone kill them! That common sense is, in fact, an auto-pilot thing. Come on! We don’t need another to remind us not to hurt others.

However due to extreme indulgences to wrong things, any man can perform then the unthinkable. According to many experts, the advent of illegal drugs has fully changed the degree of many crimes nowadays. It has been the devil’s work to destroy our minds, because he knows if he can, at least, reduce the cognitive of any person he also has poked God indirectly.

The Bible said that he who harms others has also harmed God. Satan cannot directly harm God, thus he goes to God’s creation to wreak an unnecessary havoc, so that he may hurt God. The forces of evil are real. Little does everyone know that Satan is now even doubling his destructive works because he knows that his time is already very short! His upcoming judgment is actually near.

In the past, illegal drugs were only marijuana and other less destructive ones. But just think about to how ample are illegal drugs nowadays and are flooding or destroying the youths of our generation. Such is not just happening in other countries but as well in the Philippines. Once a human mind is reduced to that which may be similar to animals, crimes can follow next.

Cain killed his twin-brother Abel. The story of the first murder was also fueled by another negative factor—it was jealousy. Similar to illegal drugs, jealousy is also dangerous. It can fully obfuscate the mind of the person who harbors it, so that he may forget even simple moral tenets. In the case of Cain, he fully forgot that he killed, not just an ordinary neighbor, but his own twin-brother!

Let us use our minds to permeate good will on earth. We are not animals! I beseech us to offer our lives to be vessels of honor. King Solomon warned us, “Above all else, guard YOUR HEART, for everything you do flows from it.” (Prov. 4:23, NIV) The heart and mind in the Bible meant only the same, it is the human soul.

Why our souls are that critical, so that the Bible compels us to guard them always? The Apostle James explained the detail of the cycle to how sin or crime ripens. “Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.” (Js. 1:15, ESV) Every wrong thing starts as a thought in the mind.

Such may stay in there for some time. Now, when it is left un-dealt, it gradually grows to eventually bring a horrible destruction. The Apostle James used the word DEATH. The construction of this particular passage conveys ample of meanings, one of which is the ability of the subject to harm others—even to kill another human being.

Thus, it is extremely imperative to fill our minds daily with right stuffs. Have the courage to reject those which can dement your brain to astray from morality. Remember, your mind is your most priced possession! Folks, if there is a factor that should influence our hearts and minds, it must be those which are from God!

If you will read and meditate the Word of God, you will receive a good influence! There is no person yet who complained that after he read the Bible, it turned him to be demented. But on the other hand, I also personally know certain individuals whose insane lives were made whole because of the Bible. In such as a chaotic time, the Word of God remains to be the only medicine which can heal a sick soul. God bless you.
