TODAY’S MANNA

BY Berlie G. Yap

“For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.” (2 Timothy 1:7 NIV)

Usually, most of our personal or even problems in the society are connected to the issue of discipline. We were shocked to see, two nights ago, that our streets in downtown were fully flooded! Accordingly, they did because most of our drainage system is clogged with countless of plastic materials. Again, the issue of the matter boils down to lack of discipline, amongst our locals.

People often blame others or even God. But little do they know that the complex problem they face is traceable to the very negligence which they recklessly do now and then. Consider this one good example, cities and countries everywhere which excel in certain aspects, in one way or the other, are surrounded with disciplined citizens. Singapore is foremost in the list, or Davao City to mention locally.

So how about Zamboanga City! Admittedly, ours is still a very long way, but sure things are not that hopeless after all, because we are still in our ripening moment. It can start in us—that includes you the readers. If we choose the higher road and are willing to pay the necessary price, we also can reap the same greatness that other places are enjoying today.

Gideon was one of the judges who were scribbled in the Old Testament. God called him in an exceptional way. His challenge was to lead a defeated country to a seeming impossible victory. When he called the men of his country, there was about 27k who responded to go to war. But God told him that their number was still many. Hence, he reduced them to 10k. But God persisted that He would bring the great deliverance to His people not in that number.

So the last step, Gideon brought the 10k men to the river and told them to drink. Probably, because all of them were pretty thirsty, they soon drank the water. Albeit, the dividing line was the manner of their drinking; most of them didn’t care but plunged to the river itself, to drink. Only some three hundred men cared to scoop the water, out from the river, through their palms.

Then God told Gideon that He had now His army. The 300 men applied automatic discipline in the first challenge which God gave them. Often, in our dire needs, we easily forget the priceless values which we were taught by our parents or the school institutions which we grew-up. Compromise is quite tempting when we are hard pressed by wrong situations. Well, human as we are, we often succumb!

Notwithstanding, those who choose to walk in the higher road are the ones who are rewarded. Discipline is a virtue. It is the same good character where other champions in life do seek for, when they are about to pick their peers. Senator Manny Pacquiao is an epitome to determination. He is well-loved by millions of Filipinos.

He said hundreds of times that his self-discipline was one of his choiced tickets to greatness. Now, he is sharing the same to others who want to emulate his life. The man easily identifies those who have the particular potentials. Accordingly, he emphasized that all of our dreams are indeed possible, that if we know to observe the proper discipline, every step of the way.

It is an admitted fact, ours is a hostile world. One will have to have the strong stamina to wade the river upstream. How? It takes a daily discipline. A perused study is the expensive requirement to any student who wants to finish his course well. A continuous faithfulness is the character which fathers must carry always, especially when they are at work.

Remember, companies, and their bosses, can easily spot the faithful from the wanton. They promote the faithful but do not give the better privileges to the undisciplined. Good productivity belongs to the hard-working, or to simply put they are the usual results of the hard-work of the disciplined employees. Hence, any meticulous executive will always have the good eyes on them—for promotions and possible higher trusts. Indeed, if you are a boss, you won’t trust a bum!

Anybody who desires to see improvement in his life, he should be willing to pay the price of daily discipline. What be difficult are only the few earlier steps, because the repeated acts may eventually become a habit, and such habit will also later translate to be a daily character. Would you believe that God gave this stern command: “For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, THAT IF ANY WOULD NOT WORK, NEITHER SHOULD HE EAT.” (2 Thess. 3:10, KJV)

Such is only a simple meal. We do not talk yet of other greater blessings ahead, which are or can only be received from the Lord alone. Now listen: they come to those who will always have the heart to apply daily discipline. God usually picks them because He used them, too, to be the good example for others to follow. God bless you.
