LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “…What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus. Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us…” (2 Timothy 1:13-14, the Holy Bible).

BLEAK 2011 CHRISTMAS FOR RP SEEN: Credit Suisse, the Swiss financial services firm, just made Christmas 2011 very bleak for Filipinos with its forecast that over-all economic growth in the Philippines for this year, originally projected to be at 5%, would only be 4.2%. This would make the Philippines the worst economic performer in Asia for 2011.

Then, even Economic Planning Secretary Cayetano Paderanga Jr. is singing a very sad tune, with his admission that achieving the 7-8 percent growth target for the first half of 2011 is now a virtual “mission impossible”, considering that so far, the country only managed to grow by 4%.

So, why are these economic slowdowns and underperformances happening? The government says these are all because of outside influences—rising oil prices, disasters Japan, slow recovery of US and European economies—but Credit Suisse is saying, on the other hand, that it is because of underperformance by the government itself. How about you, dear reader, what do you think?

ALAY LAKAD DRAWS QUERIES: Alay Lakad 2011 continued its tradition of an annual walkathon to generate funds for various socio-civic causes with a two-kilometer walk from the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) grounds to the Luneta Grandstand last Sunday, September 4, 2011, but queries are starting to surface about its organizers’ lack of transparency as to where its funds are going.

As my fellow Rotarians from District 3810 of Rotary International and myself were doing the annual march together with thousands of other people, a lot of questions kept coming my way: have the organizers reported on how much money they have been generating annually, and how much have they been giving to charity?

My answer: I am quite confident that Alay Lakad organizers, especially because many of them are Rotarians themselves, have been diligent and conscientious in the handling of the funds, guided as they are, all the time, of Rotary’s Four Way Test.

CORRUPTION IS A CURSE FROM GOD: The truth—or the lack of it—about the disclosures of WikiLeaks over the supposed involvement of former First Gentleman Mike Arroyo and his son Mikey, the congressman,  with jueteng lords and  big time smugglers during the time of former President Arroyo still has to be proven but, did you know that corruption is also a curse from God?

According to the Bible, in its Book of Deuteronomy (in its chapter 28, verses 15 and 29), a people who no longer listen to the Word of God and who no longer obey His commands will be “oppressed and robbed (and plundered) continually, with no one to come to your aid…” Certainly, being robbed and plundered continually could only mean being made to suffer corruption by those in power.

It is also significant to note from verse 29 that there is no one that will come to the aid of a corruption-saddled nation, which could only mean there is no one from the administration and opposition of that nation’s government which can stop corruption (simply because all of them are corrupt?).
