LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “…The good news has even been preached to the dead, so that after they have been judged for what they have done in this life, their spirits will live with God…” (1 Peter 4:6, the Holy Bible, Contemporary English Version).

DIGONG’S REFUTATION OF RELIGIOUS DOCTRINES BENEFITTING BELIEVERS: Indeed, it is like just as I said! Something good has come out of President Duterte’s criticisms of various religious doctrines. While religious groups which are smarting from the President’s criticisms have launched their own counter-attacks against him, many people, especially the believers (whether Christians or not), are now given the opportunity to ponder on what really is the truth about God.

It cannot be denied that as far as Christians are concerned, there is a command for each of them to truly meditate on God and on His Word, the Bible. According to the Bible, Christians need to read the Book of the Law everyday, and pay close attention to what is written there, day and night. Take note! Meditating on the Word of God is required by the Bible to be day and night!

It maybe asked: what does “meditate” mean? “Study deeply”, or “give serious thought” to what is being studied. Now, why is it necessary to study deeply, or give serious thought, to the Bible? Because the Bible, or the Good News, is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes. Now that Duterte is engaged in relentless refutation of religious doctrines, many believers are compelled to read and try to somehow understand the Bible.

CORRECT, MR. PRESIDENT, THERE IS NO “PURGATORY” IN THE BIBLE, BUT THERE IS A “PRISON FOR SPIRITS””: If a person reads the Bible, and he studies what is written there day and night, and he carefully obeys every command that he encounters in its verses, he would be given an understanding of the truth. He would have a good, prosperous, and peaceful life here on earth, he would escape the day the heavens and the earth would be burned together, and he would even assure himself of a slot in Paradise after Judgment Day.

Take, for example, the case of the truth about the doctrine espoused by the Catholics about “purgatory”. President Duterte last Tuesday, July 03, 2018, in his off the cuff speech during the anniversary foundation of Southern Leyte, roundly lambasted the doctrine and said there is no mention at all in the Bible of “purgatory”.

If the truth be told, the President is correct. It is true—and I am saying this confidently—that “purgatory” is a word that is not found in the Bible, contrary to the teachings of the Catholics. But it is equally true that the Bible is saying there is a place—where, or how it could be found by anyone is not disclosed at all—which could approximate the Catholics’ “purgatory”. The Bible calls this place a “prison for spirits”.

WHY ARE THE SPIRITS OF THE DEAD PUT IN A “PRISON” FIRST? Here is what 1 Peter 3:18-20 is saying about this “prison for spirits”: “…For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit.

“After being made alive, he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits— to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, while the ark was being built…” From these verses, one will not fail to realize that what many are saying when someone dies—that the deceased right away would be in the presence of God—is absolutely not true. No one who dies will directly go to God, or to hell.

These verses show that a deceased will have to be imprisoned first in the “prison for spirits”. Certainly, God has a reason for putting the spirit of a person who died, in the “prison for spirits” first. From my readings of the Bible, I discerned that God imprisons the spirits of the dead first, because He wants to give those who have died as sinners a final chance to be assured of a slot in Paradise, after judgment is finished!
