KAKAMPI MO ANG BATAS

BY Atty. BATAS MAURICIO

LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God…” (Romans 13:1, the Holy Bible).

QUESTION FOR THE 3RD SONA: WHY DID GOD ALLOW DUTERTE TO BECOME PRESIDENT? To Filipinos who will care to listen, or perhaps chose to just ignore, the third SONA (or State of the Nation Address) of President Duterte on July 23, 2018, I suggest that we must now strive and try to gauge whatever he says and does, using various spiritual principles.

Our problem as nation has always been the fact that when many try to judge the President on his statements and his actions, and even all others, really, the yardstick had always been the personal, family, and political interests of the ones passing judgment. This I submit is the reason why there will always be criticisms against him, or why whatever he says and does would always be wrong to them.

It should not always be this way, because the first line of inquiry among Filipinos, whether rich or poor, should be God’s will or objective, in allowing things to happen, like President Duterte becoming the president and leader of our country at this point in its history. Why did God allow Duterte to become the Philippine president in 2016? What do you think was God’s purpose for this?

WE MUST HEED THE SPIRITUAL COMMANDS ABOUT LEADERS AND OFFICIALS: Whatever be the guess, or, well, the answer of the readers of Kakampi Mo Ang Batas to this question, I am of the view that it is now time for all of us to pay attention to the spiritual commands about leaders or top officials of the countries of the world, including of course our own president at the moment, President Duterte.

One of these compelling commands is: each one should subject himself to the government authorities, for there is no authority that which God did not allow to be installed. This simply means that, no matter the process by which a leader was chosen or selected, that process had the blessings of God (and this truth, I believe, applies even to those who are said to have cheated their way to victory).

An example of this can be shown by Isaac’s granting of his deathbed blessings, supposedly for this first-born son, Esau. Esau failed to receive the blessings of his father, Isaac, because Jacob, the second son, fraudulently pretended, with the help even of their mother Rebeca, to be Esau. On the strength of these “fraudulent” grant and receipt of blessings, Jacob went on to become the father of many nations.

COMMAND TO THE PEOPLE: PRAY FOR LEADERS: The second spiritual principle that nations should always take heed of, in connection with leaders and officials, particularly President Digong now, is similarly simple: the citizenry has an obligation to pray for their leaders, seeking God’s guidance, blessings, and protection upon them.

If, as is the truth, it was God who installed these leaders of the nations, only God has the true power to move them to act for the welfare of their constituents, or, according to God’s will likewise, to act to make life miserable for the people governed by them (remember the many instances when the Israelites, God’s own people, were subjected to the rule of bad leaders?).

And it is only God who has the power to allow leaders to continue governing, or to altogether stop their reigns. The power to oust leaders does not belong to anyone, as is falsely claimed by vested interest groups in the Philippines who bask in the false glory of having ousted previous leaders of this country. In fine, we should now start using spiritual principles on our leaders, and even on our day-to-day lives.
