LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “…`Very truly I tell you,’ Jesus answered, ‘before Abraham was born, I am!’…” (Jesus Christ, our God and Savior, in John 8:58, the Holy Bible).

WRANGLING AND IN-FIGHTING AMONG OUR LEADERS ARE OUR OWN FAULT: Questions are now being raised by many right-thinking Filipinos on the incredibly vicious wrangling or in-fighting in the country today. The question they ask is, why are these deadly fights happening, in the highest echelons of power yet, in the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government? They say that because of these wrangling, our countrymen are suffering economically, socially, and politically.

There will be many explanations for this phenomenon, but there is one angle that must be seriously looked into—an angle that has been written through generations, and that is the spiritual angle.

According to the commands in the Bible, wrangling, in-fighting, and dissension in a country result from the people’s own fault. You refuse to believe this?

Let us read Deuteronomy 28:15 and 20-21 then: “… However, if you do not listen to the Lord your God and do not carefully follow and obey all his commands and decrees I am giving you today, all these curses will come on you and overtake you…

“The Lord will send on you curses, confusion, and rebuke in everything you put your hand to, until you are destroyed and come to sudden ruin because of the evil you have done in forsaking him…”

It is very clear, isn’t it? If the reason for all the curses, confusion, and rebuke, including wrangling and in-fighting among our people and our leaders, comes from failure to listen to, and obey God, we should all return to God to remedy all of these. How do we go back to God? The command is simple: listen to His Word, and obey His commands. Can we do this?

THE TRUTH THAT SHALL SET US FREE: In John 8:31-32 of the Bible, Jesus Christ, our God and Savior, discloses that there is a truth that shall set us all free. Yet, a reading of those verses and of the verses before and after that will not show what this truth is.

It would seem Jesus did not directly clarify what he was referring to as the “truth” that shall set man free.

So, my question is, what is the truth that will set us all free, according to Jesus? In answering this question, it might help if we read verses 21 to 30 of John 8, where there is a discussion of who Jesus really is, prompted by His own statements about Himself.

In verse 21, Jesus is saying that He is going away, and though His disciples will look for Him, they will not find Him. So the Jews who were with Him asked if He will kill Himself. In response, Jesus declared the Jews are from the earth while He is from above, and that they would die in their sins if they did not believe that He is He.

JESUS SAYS HE IS GOD AND SAVIOR: That last statement of Jesus compelled those around Him to ask, “Who are you?” In reply, Jesus cryptically said: “Just what I have been telling you from the beginning.” What was Jesus telling His disciples and all those who cared to listen to Him from the beginning? That He is God and Savior.

There is no mistaking about this. Indeed, while the different translations of the Bible may have obliterated, deliberately or otherwise, the true message that Jesus imparted to His disciples and to the people who listened to Him, it could not be denied that He had repeatedly stated that He is God and Savior.
