KAKAMPI MO ANG BATAS

BY Atty. BATAS MAURICIO

LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled…” (Genesis 6:5-7, the Holy Bible).

TRAFFIC VIOLENT ROWS: MMDA ENFORCERS’ FAULT: For the sake of everyone and of the MMDA (or the Metro Manila Development Authority), here is a clear explanation as to why more and more private motorists are being forced to physically and verbally tangle, or quarrel, with MMDA enforcers who flag them down for traffic violations, coming from lawyer Veegee Garcia of Diliman, Quezon City: the quarrels, which oftentimes are violent, are the fault of the enforcers themselves. Why?

Here was Veegee’s post in Facebook: “Altercations between drivers and MMDA enforcers are becoming more common. If you ask me, the reason why private motorists get easily angered when they are flagged down for traffic violations is the fact that, there are plenty of other motorists who violate traffic regulations but are not issued traffic tickets, especially those driving the likes of jeepneys, UV express, buses, trikes.

“Many of them stop on the road but don’t care to pull over, even positioning their vehicles outward so they can easily weave out later, causing jams; many cut through vehicles patiently lining up, just to enable them to be ahead on an underpass or in an overpass. These are very obvious violations, abounding in many streets, in front even of scores of enforcers, but which are not attended to. And yet, private motorists are flagged down for the flimsiest of reasons. This is really annoying…”

SEN. VILLAR’S LAMENT VS. PDP LABAN: AN ALLIANCE POCKMARKED WITH TREACHERY? The online version of a big newspaper from Makati City carried a news item about the laments of Sen. Cynthia Villar of the Nacionalista Party, which appears to be a bit awkward. The newspaper reported that it was former Sen. Manny Villar who was the “founder” of the NP. It is a well-known fact that Manny was not really the founder of NP. He maybe the leader of the NP now, but not the founder. I hope this newspaper that inquires on news daily would be more careful.

Be that as it may, Cynthia’s statements quoted in that news story were also truly awkward. The story said she lamented the alliance between political parties where one of the allies has been raiding the membership of its allied parties. What Cynthia wanted to convey, although she stopped short of actually saying it, is this: is it alright for allied parties to be treacherous to one another by the taking away of the members of the other parties in the alliance?

This is truly awkward if you ask me, considering that Cynthia and her families—the Villars and the Aguilars of Las Pinas City—are veteran politicians. She should already know by now that in politics, there are no loyalties to one another by and among politicians, and even by and among their parties. What usually happens is that, politicians gravitate towards, and profess their loyalty to, whoever wields power. This is the reason why our country is in turmoil, isn’t not?

US INDEPENDENCE HALL: A REMINDER TO MAN’S DOUBLE-FACED CHARACTER: This double-faced character of human beings represents one of the most debilitating problems in the Philippines and in the whole world. It should be clear to everyone that while humans, on one side, can profess adherence to the welfare of the citizenry and faith in God, their other side reflects personal greed and lack of concern for others, and disobedience to God’s commands.

I saw this more poignantly yesterday when my family and I visited the Independence Visitor Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. On display there, near the world-famous Liberty Bell, is a fiery tirade on slavery—where the whites practiced and defended their “ownership” of blacks as human slaves, even when they were fiercely fighting for democracy and equality of all men.

The truth is that, this is not new. This was warned about even in the first book of the Bible, Genesis, in its chapter 6, verses five to seven, and in Romans 3:23. God Himself said man had become terribly sinful, and his heart’s leaning is always towards sinfulness. Because of that, God vowed to eradicate the human race. If we wish to avoid this deadly fate, we should endeavor to always have faith in, and obedience to, God.
