By Remedios F. Marmoleño

She was small and cute and held the highest office in the land. But then she did things that weren’t so cute. Eventually she was charged and detained in what was called a house  and  a hospital detention.

A PR expert must have advised her on how to milk the maximum “pity” from the public for she soon was shown in “pitiful” photos which had her wearing a neck brace and looking like she was experiencing cruel and inhuman punishment.  But even in this “condition “  she won the election as a representative of a congressional district in her home province of Pampanga.

I forget how things went but her photos  next began to come out in the papers, showing her not sick and wan but  her old cute self and no longer wearing the  neck brace. A miracle! I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a committee investigating her cure as a result of supernatural intervention. (Snicker.)

As a result of strictly human intervention she not only overcame whatever it was that required her to wear a neck brace  but she is now the Speaker of the House. You can say what you want about former Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez but he was shown a thing or two by two women – the former wearer of a neck brace and the well-taught daughter of someone you and I know. The #MeToo Movement did not even have to come in.

So what do we have now? Someone who has become the Speaker of the House and just might be the Prime Minister if some people succeed in railroading the noble objective of constitutional reform into something that is more dramatic and more productive for some people. Who are these people? Your guess is as good as mine. You don’t have to think too deeply and you get the answer.

No sooner than we have the former neck brace wearer strutting her stuff when we see our “honorables” fighting over such things as which party is the minority party? Which party is the opposition party? Who is supposed to be the leader of which group? And such other questions that took our minds away from the growing toll of the illegal drugs war, the galloping inflation, the selection of the SC Chief Justice, etc. These are but trivial national matters compared to who bangs the gavel at the next session of the House. House of what?  Oh, you know.

If this Philippine situation were made into a Broadway play ala HAMILTON, and even if Lin Manual Miranda provided the creative spirit behind the play, it would still be found too fantastic to be believable.  Even if Nora Aunor accepts the leading role.
