LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… `So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God’…” (Luke 1:35, the Holy Bible)

JOSE MARI CHAN AT DWWW 774: REMEMBER JESUS ON CHRISTMAS:  I chanced upon Mr. Jose Mari Chan, one of the greatest Filipino composers and singers of all time, last Friday, August 31, 2018, being interviewed at the program “Minsan may isang awit” (“Once there was a song”) which was hosted by disc jockey Avee Devierte over DWWW 774 kHz. He issued quite a poignant reminder as the so-called “ber months” ushered in the Christmas season yet again: remember Jesus, the God who assumed the form of man with flesh and blood to accept the penalty for man’s sinfulness, during Christmas time.

I was totally amazed because what Jose Mari Chan said was something very deep. It was not a simple message about the love that a man has for a woman, or vice versa, which has been the meat of many of the songs he composed and became local hits (Deep In My Heart, Refrain, Let’s Stop and Talk Awhile). Rather, it was about the great love that God has for mankind, which prompted Him to come down to earth from heaven in the form of a human being with flesh and blood.

Too, what the famous singer-composer said appeared as a stark recognition on his part that many Filipinos of today have gone wayward in their celebration of Christmas---no longer to express thanksgiving for the love of God for man, but as another opportunity to be squandered on eating, drinking, and festivities that are focused only on satisfying human desires. I am praying that Jose Mari Chan’s sentiments about Christmas given to Ms. Avee Devierte would be appreciated by everyone. Merry Christmas!

THE ORIGINAL CHRISTMAS STORY: Just for the record, Christmas is an event that was foretold even before it happened. A little research will show that there was a king whose kingdom was being threatened by an invasion of two bigger kingdoms. This caused fear on the king and his people, prompting God to send a messenger to tell the king and his people not to be needlessly afraid because the invasion will not be carried out anyway.

The king did not readily believe the message given to him, so the messenger dared the king to ask God for a sign that the invasion will not really happen. But the king did not ask for a sign, saying he did not want to put God to a test. So the messenger gave a sign. He said, the virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, who will be called Emmanuel, which meant “God is with us”.

The messenger then declared that the son who has been born will also be called “Mighty God” and “Everlasting Father”, who will reign on King David’s throne and kingdom, with justice and righteousness forever.

BIRTH OF JESUS ANNOUNCED BY ANGELS: Much later, an angel of God visited the virgin, and told her that she found favor with God and that, as a result, she will conceive and give birth to a son who will be called Jesus, “the Son of the Most High”, and who will be given the throne of King David where he will reign forever. The virgin, although greatly troubled, accepted her fate and said “let it be done unto me”.

The virgin was scheduled to marry her fiancé. But the man learned that she was already pregnant even before they could be married, so he planned on leaving her quietly. But, an angel of God came to him in a dream, telling him not to divorce her, and assuring him that the baby in her womb was from God and would have to be named Jesus (which meant, “he will save his people”).

Believing what was told to him, the fiancé of the virgin set aside his plan to divorce her and instead took her as his wife, although they did not have any marital relation until after Jesus was born.
