Erin Tanada: truly a tradpol reaction! PDF Print E-mail

LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… ‘Do not pervert justice; do not show partiality to the poor or favoritism to the great, but judge your neighbor fairly’...” (Leviticus 19:15, the Holy Bible)

ERIN TANADA: TRULY A TRADPOL’S REACTION! Typical “tradpol” (or traditional politician, or a politician who has nothing else in his mind but his political career) is how I describe the reaction of former Deputy House Speaker and former Quezon Rep. Erin Tanada on the guilty verdict that was meted against former First lady and incumbent Ilocos Norte Rep. Imelda Romualdez Marcos, and which ordered her to suffer imprisonment for about 77 years.

Erin’s reaction was a “tradpol” reaction, because that is how he is expected to respond, considering that he and his ancestor-politicians from the Tanada family (which include the late Sen. Lorenzo and former Sen. Wigberto) belong to the group that had been locked in a political battle with the Marcos family for quite some time now.

Of course, Erin would always insist that the Marcoses committed various crimes for which they should be held accountable.

Fine. But, have you ever heard Erin talk about the crimes that the Aquinos and their allies from the Liberal Party are also being accused of? He has been absolutely silent, and not a word has come from him, even if the crimes they are accusing the Marcoses with are as serious as those being hurled against the Aquinos.

TRADPOLS ARE OBSTACLE TO TRUTH, JUSTICE, AND CHANGE: The likes of Erin Tanada and his own political allies, as far as I am concerned, constitute a serious obstacle to the flowering of truth, justice, and true change leading to peace and prosperity in the Philippines. The reason for this is clear in my mind: their system of justice is skewered in that they have closed one of their eyes, deliberately at that, to the crimes of their allies and political patrons.

While they foam in their mouths in lambasting the Marcoses, they have virtually sealed their lips against the graft and corruption of their own party mates who, in one way or another, had a hand in bringing them back to power after Marcos’ martial law. So okay. Did anyone ever hear anything from Erin about the Dengvaxia vaccine, the SAF 40 massacre in Maguindanao on the very birthday of Cory Aquino, and the hundreds of billions of pesos spent under the Aquino government’s disbursement acceleration program (DAP) which the Supreme Court declared as illegal?

With Erin’s silence on these very serious matters, he is clearly to be presumed to be consenting to those anomalies of the previous regime. It is clear therefore that the Filipino people can never expect him to push programs that would really help our countrymen, for considerations of alliances would always come into play with him. Without doubt, he is simply just another politician who has no other concern but his personal, family, and political advancement.

WE SHOULD NOT PLAY FAVORITES: I really don’t know whether the readers of Kakampi Mo Ang Batas will vote for this kind of candidate, especially because the position involved, being a senator, is a very sensitive position in the Republic. As far as I am concerned, however, Erin Tanada should never be trusted with a Senate position, as long as one of his eyes remains blind to the misdemeanor and the corruption of other people, particularly of his political allies.

A person who keeps quiet in the face of an anomaly is considered as a participant in the commission of that anomaly himself.

His or her pronouncements against corruption, or his claims that he is the people’s champion against malfeasance in government, should never be believed one whit. Especially so if he or she refuses steadfastly and consistently to even merely look at the allegations of wrongdoing against his allies.

As our Life’s Inspirations today intones, we should not play favorites, or side with anyone, especially on matters of corruption and shenanigans in government. Treatment of others should always be on the side of truth, fairness, and in due consideration of the welfare of the people, without regard to whether the person involved is rich or poor, strong or weak, ally or not. That is what I want to see from Erin Tanada before I could even consider writing his name on my ballot.
