LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “…For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit…” (1 Peter 3:18, the Holy Bible).

BLOODBATH LOOMS IN CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY? Gen. Nicanor Bartolome, the chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), must now act to prevent a looming bloodbath among police officers and their supporters in Cagayan de Oro City, arising from the alleged mauling by five PNP officers from the Regional Public Safety Battalion in the city of two junior policemen from the same battalion.

The scandal has grown so big it is now the talk of the town in the whole of Northern Mindanao, primarily because top PNP officials in the region appeared hesitant to investigate the case and impose necessary sanctions against the erring policemen.

But this inaction has generated so much controversy over the case even among police officers in Cagayan de Oro City. Our sources are telling us there are now plots and counter-plots which are making the situation so volatile, and which could trigger shooting anytime.

WHY IS DPWH STALLING ON ROAD PROJECT? What is preventing the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) from giving the go-signal to a proposal from the Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation to build a P20 billion-13-kilometer elevated road that will connect the North and South Luzon Expressways? The government will not spend a single centavo for the project, so why is it dilly-dallying on giving its consent?

UCPB NEW PREXY MUST BE GIVEN A CHANCE: I agree that there is no longer any reason to investigate the loans given by the United Coconut Planters Bank (UCPB) to businessman Eduardo Cojuangco Jr. during the Estrada administration, precisely because those loans have been paid to the last centavo, including the interest charges usually paid by borrowers. What is the point of  investigating a loan that has been paid?

I also agree that Jeronimo Kilayko, the bank president at the time Cojuangco were given the loans and who is re-taking control of the bank, should be given an opportunity to prove himself first, amidst allegations that he represents the interest of Cojuangco in the bank and not of small coconut farmers.

Anyway, with an active media and a Senate having the capacity to monitor the bank even on a daily basis, it is going to be easy finding out if the bank is really being run to the ground, as Sen. Ralph Recto claimed the other day.

BIBLICAL CHARACTERS, IV: In Genesis 4 of the Bible, Cain and Abel loomed as the principal characters, being the sons of Adam and Eve. Cain incurred the wrath of God, while Abel was favored by the Almighty. Cain got jealous of Abel. Because of this jealousy, Cain killed Abel, making him a cursed being the rest of his life.
