LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… the angel said to her, `Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High’…” (Matthew 1:30-32, the Holy Bible).

WHY ARE PNOY AND THE HOUSE ZEROING IN ON CORONA? So President Aquino and his allies at the House of Representatives have nothing but condemnatory accusations against Chief Justice Renato Corona to justify his impeachment. But can the President and our lawmakers explain why are they zeroing in on Corona alone when the charges against him also resulted from the vote of the other justices of the Supreme Court?

WHY IS CORONA BEING SINGLED OUT? For instance, one of the charges says Corona committed “partiality in granting a temporary restraining order (TRO) in favor of Gloria Arroyo and her husband Jose Miguel Arroyo in order to give them an opportunity to escape prosecution and to frustrate the ends of justice.” But this TRO was not solely Corona’s act, but of seven other justices. Why is Corona being singled out?

MAJORITY OF SC ACTED, NOT ONLY CJ: The same thing is true with respect to the charge that Corona is guilty of  “blatantly disregarding the principle of separation of powers by issuing a status quo order against the House of Representatives in the impeachment of then Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez”. The majority of the justices voted to issue this order, but why is Corona the only one being attacked here?

REP. TIANGCO’S REVELATIONS: If we are to carefully weigh the resignation from the ruling coalition of Navotas City Rep. Toby Tiangco, it would give the impression that the impeachment complaint against Corona was signed by lawmakers motivated not by a sincere belief in the charges against the Chief Justice, but in their desire to have their pork barrel allocations released. Imagine, Toby said he and his fellow lawmakers were not even allowed to read the impeachment complaint before they signed it?

WARNING OUT VS. PROCESSED FOOD THIS X’MAS: Agham Party List Rep. Angelo Palmones has a warning that merry-makers this Christmas season must take to heart: there is a great danger that most of the frozen meat being used to make processed food products, such as hotdogs, sausages and other food items classified as red meat, are contaminated with bacteria. The best thing to do, therefore, is to buy fresh foods and cook them properly for the traditional noche buena and media noche. Avoid processed foods, and have a happy holiday season.

CONGRATS, SEN. SANTIAGO: My heartfelt congratulations to Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago, for her having been chosen as a judge in the International Criminal Court (ICC). The ICC’s gain is a sure loss for the Philippine Senate, and for the entire Filipino nation as well, but then, this is one opportunity for a Filipino intellectual giant to shine internationally, especially in the complex field of criminal law and justice. After her stint at the ICC, Miriam can return home to become the first woman chief justice of the Supreme Court here.

PRAYERS FOR ABALOS: I will only have high praises for the behavior of Benjamin Abalos Sr., former Chairman of the Commission on Elections, in the face of the electoral sabotage case that was filed against him by the Aquino government. Really, in voluntarily giving himself up to the authorities after a warrant was issued for his arrest, Abalos showed that there are still Filipinos who are willing to follow the law even if all others are trashing it. Our prayers are for you, Mr. Chairman!

WHY THE SPECIAL TREATMENT FOR GLORIA? Which brings to the fore the incarceration of Gloria Macapagal Arroyo at a suite at the Veterans’ Memorial Medical Center in Quezon City as a form of special treatment. Yes, she was a former president and yes, she must be treated with respect. But then, Justice Secretary Leila De Lima is right: Arroyo is still a detainee who must be treated like a detainee. Why is Gloria being given a special treatment now?

PJA PREXY LAMBASTS CORONA IMPEACHMENT: Philippine Judges Association President Judge Antonio Eugenio of the Manila Regional Trial Court has an explosive sentiment on Corona’s impeachment. He says  justice and rule of law are now measured by popularity and by superiority in numbers, no longer by the legal yardsticks that our legal and judicial systems have been established with. I guess this will now bar his appointment to a higher judicial post under this government, right?
