Politics like business sometimes relIES on superstition and luck. As the year 2012 is nearing and just 13 nights away, political preparation short of an actual campaign is heating up for the election on May 2013. It might be 12 long months for the non-politician but very short time for the neophyte politician. However season politicians can smell and feel any election situation and they know where they stand. There is one seasoned politician, whom I know pretty well and he is born on The Year of the Horse. He is Congressman Erico Basilio Apolinario Fabian, a broadcaster, TV personality, former City Councilor, City Vice-mayor, City Mayor and now incumbent Congressman of the city’s second congressional district.

Cong. Fabian is now serving his last term and so with Mayor Celso Lorenzo Lobregat while Congresswoman Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar has still one more term in 2013. These are the Big 3 in Zamboanga City politics. All of them have never mentioned their political plans in 2013, they are holding on to their aces close to their chest but carpetbaggers and political pundits, over a cup of coffee are having political forecast  almost everywhere in the city, from the city proper, to the east and west coast, political topics are almost the same.
* * * *

They make forecast (agree or disagree and believe it or not) that Mayor Celso Lobregat will run for Congressman in District 1, Congressional area of Beng Climaco and Mayor Lobregat will field his brother Jomar Lobregat for Congress in District 2  which will be vacated by Congressman Erbie Fabian. In this fearless forecast, what will happen to Congressman Beng Climaco? Will she run for city mayor and slug it out with anybody that comes her way?  The city’s opposition political group are tossing up in a news item some two weeks ago, former congressman and Dakak resort owner Nonong Jalosjos, who is also known to have a Zamboanguena mother who resides in Barangay Tubungan here in the city and many believe that Nonong Jalosjos will accept the offer and challenge and is willing to bankroll the opposition’s political campaign in 2012 up to election time in 2013. The political exercise of 2013 and campaign period in 2012, all the excitement will be on the city Mayor slot because there is one dark horse who is also willing and ready to slug it out with anybody, last congressional termer and incumbent Congressman Erbie Fabian, whose slogan “Amor con Amor se Paga” is still very popular after almost 20 years in the city.

Cong. Fabian must not hang his gloves in 2013, he must continue to serve the city in a position that he is familiar with, the City Mayorship. His stint as city mayor for only over 6 months, when he succeeded the late city mayor Maria Clara L. Lobregat, might be short but he has done so much by securing the tenures of many employees of the city into permanency. He continued the unfinished projects of the late city mayor and supported many charitable institutions that served the constituency of the city. He served the city in a scheme of leading by example. As Mayor, he augmented the budget for free medicines for the poor and at the government hospitals. He brought the city government closer to the hearts of the barangay folks through his constant barangay visits. Congressman Erbie needed not much introduction because his projects in the city can be seen. No other city and national official gave much to the city’s sports development. Congressman Fabian’s covered multi-purpose courts throughout the city helped develop athletic potentials of the city’s youth and the only government official who brought international boxing bouts in the city, to entertain the city’s populace and boxing enthusiasts with live boxing bouts by international boxers, who in the past can only be seen in television.    Rep. Fabian brought entertainment to the barangays by sponsoring shows during fiestas. His informative television shows helped explain many issues that were bogging the minds of many of the city’s residents. He is indeed a “hero” to many of his acquaintances.

Scoop: This political forecast for 2013 might come true, at the rate the political opposition and the incumbent city officials have been doing lately. Almost all of them have “secret agenda”. Better tell the truth, it will set you free.
