The opening of the basketball inter-zone league of Barangay Talon-Talon last Saturday, March 22, really impressed me. It was well prepared. A mass parade with marching bands and cheer dancing at Talon-Talon High School gym was held before the formal tossing of the basketball. Different teams composed of young kids to senior citizens were formed to keep this tournament game more exciting to watch.  This event has indeed cheered up Talon-Talon residents and created a faith that their barangay is the place to stay.

The unfortunate Zamboanga siege last year had a negative impact and impression about Talon-Talon. It was adjacent to the siege conflict areas and became a passage way for the bad elements. There was a time long-time Talon-Talon residents though of moving out. The cost of the real estate property of the place even went down. Fear griped the place. It was understandable. Who wants to stay in a place where you can’t find sleep well in the night because of the possibility outsider criminals crawling in?

But thanks to God, the newly elected Barangay Chairman Teody Arquiza took the challenge to improve and develop his beloved barangay, and keep it safe. With the full support of his fellow barangay leaders, constituents, local government, police and military officials, Talon-Talon is rebuilding itself as a place to raise a happy family in a peaceful neighborhood.

And this summer basketball sport can definitely create a stronger and closer bonding among the residents of Talon-Talon and shoo-away the bad elements. Local residents will get to know each other better.  That day also, Barangay Talon-Talon had their regular early Saturday Zumba exercise, a tree planting with JCI, and a bloodletting at the barangay hall.

I pray that other barangays of Zamboanga City will also have similar activities to develop  a closer barangay camaraderie, and for them to know who their constituents are and to get them involved.
