My parents were excited last Monday evening and told me the amazing silent drill of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) they witnessed that day at Paseo del Mar. It was inspiring to see the snappy young 195 cadets in their neat uniform and snappy formation they told me (4 of them I learned are from this city).

I was not able to see it myself as I was in a business meeting but I am sharing in Pep Talk the excitement of my parents The event was the traditional annual Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Southern Cruise. It aims to recruit only the best, brightest and fittest applicants for the military service nationwide. It’s a 4-day Southern Cruise in Zamboanga from April 20-23.

PMA spokesman Maj. Sonny Gonzales, in a press briefing at City Hall, invited young men and women to grab the opportunity of studying at the premier military institution in Asia. And this is the reason I am featuring it today. Let’s hope that more Zamboangueños will be interested and qualified be part of our military leaders someday.

News related that the Southern Cruise, according to Maj. Gonzales has various goals, foremost of which is to enhance knowledge and awareness of the cadets on the different units of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. The activity is also intended to enable the cadets to engage with stakeholders and taxpayers who are responsible for the PMA scholarship; enable cadets to learn the diverse culture of the people in places that they visit and finally for the cadets out to different communities so people could see them not just in television but also in person.

Maj.Gonzales added that the PMA has a quota of 350 cadets yearly, however the academy falls short of the number as many fail during medical or physical examinations. The entrance exam will be held on the last Sunday of August at the Western Mindanao State University (WMSU), the accredited examination center in Zamboanga City.
