In coordination with Western Mindanao Command (WesMinCom), officers and members of Zamboanga Press Club (ZPC) conducted another laudable community immersion program last May 4, 2014 at Barangay Sibulao where the not-yet-famous majestic Merloquet Falls is located. This is one of the many projects of ZPC under its active present president JB Francisco.

Bags of foodstuff donated by friends of ZPC were given to the residents of Sibulao. After interviewing and mingling with the residents, the group enjoyed bathing and swimming at Merloquet Falls since it is a Sunday – a day off for most press people.

I was not able to join because Sunday is a day of worship and family day for me. I commend our media organization for such a worthy and noble task. We can reach our hearts to the masa people beyond our media desks and computers. Thank you also to WesMinCom for partnering with ZPC in this project.

I went to Merloquet Falls more than 2 years ago, and if you ask me, a Merloquet trip is worth an adventure. It can be one of Zamboanga City’s best tourist attractions. Fresh mountain air, singing birds, and green tall trees will make you love mother nature more. Standing or sitting under the strong cascading waterfalls is relaxing – you get a natural refreshing massage. Swimming in the shallow water of Merloquet is really safe and cool – no adult I think will drown in a 2 or 3 feet deep water. Bring your own food and drinks it is advised as there are  no stores there. There is also a minimum entrance fee of P5.00 only and few simple cottages I learned.

Though the passage going to Merloquet has been improved with concrete barangay roads and stairs going down to the waterfall site, the place need more promotion and more support from the local government. For now if one wants to go there, the most convenient way is by a private car or van. It is quite a hassle to to ride public transportation especially if you have kids or tagging along senior citizens. It is more than an hour and half travel time trip.

And it sad but true, there is no local travel agency offering a convenient package tour to Merloquet Falls (sighed). I asked why – they don’t want to take the security risks and be accountable to their clients is the answer I got. Well, I don’t wonder, even local government officials will not allow their children and visitors to go alone there without security guards.
