Admirable Zamboanga City multi-awardee NGO, I CAN Make a Difference, will headline a fun run, “I CAN Bottle Run 2.0,” this coming Sunday June 1. Aim to help build a study kiosk made of recycled plastic bottles inside of Edwin Andrews Airbase, it will be the first of such kind “environmentally friendly infrastructure” in Zamboanga City.

This is the second fun bottle run project of I CAN which is a very laudable environmental program because empty plastic bottles are being re-used. Instead of throwing or burning 1.5 liter plastic bottles, it is being collected, filled with sand and hardened with cement. It will then be used as sturdy substitutes for hollow blocks in building walls.

The first successful fun bottle run of I CAN was two years ago and it helped build a lying-in center (a health center for pregnant women) named “The I CAN Bottle Lying-In Center” in Lakewood, Zamboanga del Sur. What made this center unique and attention-getter; its walls are made up of recycled plastic bottles which the community gathered. I CAN helped financed it with a fun run activity plus financial supports from kind-hearted personalities.

The I CAN Bottle Run 2.0 will carry the theme,“What Battles Destroy, Bottles Will Build,” in reference to the unfortunate 2013 Zamboanga Siege, and in support of the city’s campaign to rebuild a better Zamboanga City.  Starting point of the 500 meters (kids), 5km, and 10km fun run is at Paseo del Mar. Kick off will be 5:30am. Pre-registration is at Southway Mall.

I CAN as a NGO has won local and national recognitions among them are as a nationalist finalist of Project Freedom and a national award from TAYO (Ten Accomplished Youth Organization).  The group is composed of volunteer social-change makers who bring simple, cost efficient, environment-friendly, and synergistic solutions to health and other health-related problems within communities thru inter-sectoral participation and inter-community development.

I CAN also partners with Philippines Funds for Little Kids and is the chief implementor of the Zamsur Funds for Little Kids. It helped built 44 bankas (small boats) for children of Lakewood who have to cross the lake in going to school. Thru the same partnership, I CAN built the Floating Ambulance, a pumpboat to bring patients across the lake where the Rural Health Unit (RHU) is located.

I CAN is involved too in developing the Passion Wearthy Project which uses a new technology of reusing non- recyclable plastic bags and converting them into a durable  school bags. With the support  of BY GEMS PARTY KINGDOM, I CAN is helping pediatric cancer patients of Zamboanga City Medical Center recover.

Isaiah 24:4-6 – “The earth dries up and withers, the world languishes and withers, the exalted of the earth languish. The earth is defiled by its people; they have disobeyed the laws, violated the statutes and broken the everlasting covenant. Therefore a curse consumes the earth; its people must bear their guilt. Therefore earth's inhabitants are burned up, and very few are left.” Save our environment or else.
