Zamboanga City joined all other cities and countries in celebrating World Blood Day last June 14 a worldwide campaign led by World Health Organization (WHO). . Spearheaded by Zamboanga Red Cross, the day started with a parade that ended at the gymnasium of Zamboanga City State College of Marine and Sciences where hundreds of students, civilians, and other sectors of our society came to donate blood.

The focus of this year's campaign of WHO is "Safe blood for saving mothers". According to studies, every day about 800 women die from pregnancy or childbirth-related complications. Severe bleeding during delivery and after childbirth is a major cause of mortality, morbidity and long-term disability. The goal of the campaign is to increase awareness about why timely access to safe blood and blood products is essential for all countries as part of a comprehensive approach to prevent maternal deaths.

If you were not able to join like me, I do encourage people to donate their blood at the Red Cross Center at Petitt Barracks anytime and help save lives. Who knows one day you may need it or a loved one. Donating blood is also good because new healthy blood cells are generated in our body. We will sort of get a “free laboratory exams” because our donated blood will be examined thoroughly. Last time I gave, I was detected to be anemic –lacks iron. I never thought of it because I was confident that I am healthy. Thanks to Red Cross, I am back in top shape.
