For the 2014 Golden and Silver Jubilarians of the Western Mindanao State University, their grand homecoming opening yesterday was a happy and a moving experience. As I had the privilege to welcome the alumni, it felt great to see the men and women graduates of Class ’63 and ‘64 huddle together. One can feel their excitement as well from the Class ’69, this year’s Sapphire Jubilarians (45 years – 5 more years to go before they too will reach the alumni golden stage). They were so happy. The university’s name during their time was Zamboanga Normal College and the course being offered then was education but they went into different fields I found out. The 1988 and 1989 Silver Jubilarians from colleges, high school, and elementary who are the honorees are mighty proud to be back home once more to their beloved alma mater.

I am sure they all recalled their old school days. Remembering the fun as well as unremarkable moments like getting high grades or failures, cheating, full load or cutting classes, the forever friendship, intrigues, campus crush and love, favorite teachers, etc. which are all part of this event. But what really stands out always, the camaraderie are being connected again with one another.

Since it is a joined alumni 93rd and 94th homecoming, there were more attendees in this event. The 93rd homecoming was supposed to be held last December 2012 but it was moved this week because the unfortunate Zamboanga siege effect was still there. This time it was timed with the university’s 110th foundation week celebration and the 94th homecoming was moved together in this same date.

Special guest was Zamboanga District-1 Congressman Celso Lobregat. He is an adopted alumnus of the university where he was conferred too with the doctorate in humanities years back.

University president Dr. Milabel Ho presented briefly the vision of the university. There are moves already to improve existing buildings and build new ones that are architectural and environmental friendly, she said. The building’s designs will have a similar design like the original social hall building with windows made of capiz shells, she proudly added. She also officially launched the $100 donation campaign donation from alumni to help fast track improvements and services of the university.

A motorcade was held in the afternoon that ended with a merry making fellowship in the evening. It’s really nice to be at your home that molded you. Today is the election of the alumni officers. Tomorrow will be a testimonial dinner that honors the alumni.
