I had the opportunity to meet Iloilo Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog last Monday in the birthday party of Dr. Rosvi Bagaforo, a close friend of my wife, in Iloilo City. And I got a personal confirmation from him that he is one of the 25 shortlist nominees from a list of 121 candidates for the prestigious 2014 World Mayor Prize. He is the only one nominated from the Philippines and one of the 6 Mayors from the Asia region.

What is the World Mayor Prize? The philantropic City Mayors Foundation awards the World Mayor Prize every two years to a mayor who has made outstanding contributions to his / her community and has developed a vision for urban living and working that is relevant to towns and cities across the world. The Prize has been awarded since 2004. The winner of the 2014 World Mayor Prize and other results of the World Mayor Project will be declared in January 2015 (

The winner is chosen by email testimonies send from around the world.   The City Mayors board of fellows will choose the winner and two runner-ups based on the number of email votes received and the strength and passion of supporting testimonials. The organizers believe that the persuasiveness of argument is as important as the number of votes. This ensures that a ‘good’ mayor from a smaller city can compete on equal terms with a mayor from a large metropolis. All email votes are counted manually and testimonials are read by the editors of World Mayor. Fraudulent and manipulated votes will not be counted. Multiple votes will also be deleted.

Mayor Mabilog said, “I am humbled by this nomination along with the overwhelming support of my fellow Ilonggos, the Filipino people, and even from other countries. We will grab this opportunity to push our beloved Iloilo City as a global destination and one of the premiere cities of the Philippines. Let us all unite and show the world how beautiful Iloilo is. From the Iloilo City Hall, the only green government building in the country, the international award-winning Iloilo River, and the pride of culture and heritage that we have as Ilonggos most especially the Calle Real Heritage Zone. Let us not also forget about our efforts to uplift the lives of our fellow Ilonggos living here, we strive to invite investors too to come over so that we will have more employment. The list goes on and we have more things to accomplish for our Dakbanwa sang Iloilo. My City My Pride, I am Iloilo Proud to be Filipino!”

Vote for Mayor Mabilog by sending an email testimonial to;  write “Iloilo Mabilog” in the subject line and send before Sept. 30, 2014.

And let us not lose heart and grow weary and faint in acting nobly and doing right,  for in due time and at the appointed season we shall reap,if we do not loosen and relax our courage and faint." Galatians 6:9
