To showcase as well uphold that Zamboanga City is rising after the unfortunate 2013 September siege, especially the children (who are dear to her heart), the City Government of Zamboanga under the helm of our courageous and determined City Mayor Beng Climaco-Salazar to “Build Back a Better Zamboanga” held an art exhibit at the City Hall from September 9 to 11, 2014.

Dubbed “Exposicion Sobre Alegria En Artes de los Niños y Niñas” (Exposition of Fun Arts by Boys and Girls), it exhibited art works of the children from different schools affected by the siege. The children were taught by renowned Zamboangueño international artist Rameer Tawasil and a distinguished Portuguese and Macau-based artist Joaquin Franco (Tawasil’s close associate) in a 10-day art painting and collage workshop at the Zamboanga City Coliseum. It was in collaboration of the Zamboanga City Government Communications Working Group with the Asia Foundation and the International Organization for Migration.

The children’s art works are reflections of their emotions and feelings during the crisis. And the art event was an opportunity for the people to see how these children are coping from their siege traumatic experiences through art, Mayor Salazar said in her speech. The proceeds sale of the children’s art works sale will be given back to the children through various interventions as part of our city’s recovery and rehabilitation efforts.
