Thanks to our energetic DOT (Department of Tourism) Regional Director Mary June Bugante we may have more tourists from Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia visiting our city someday. And in vice-versa, we can also travel to these countries easily and see what they got. Hurray to her office for they are doing a good job in promoting our city!

This is one of the positive outcomes of the BIMP-EAGA (Brunei Indonesia Malaysia Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area) Joint Tourism Development Cluster Meeting held at the Garden Orchid  sponsored by DOT-9 last Tuesday, October 21 .  The different tourism representatives of these 4 countries discussed on how to help one another in promoting their country’s environmental tourism sites. And credit to DOT-9, the foreign delegates lauded the big tourism potential of city before they left.

There are 101 reasons why world tourists should visit EAGA countries and cities like Zamboanga City. The rich and vast natural environmental biodiversity of the forests and marine areas of the EAGA countries makes it’s really a “dream tourist destination”. It is home to two of the world’s and oldest rainforests (Borneo and Papua), and world’s richest marine biodiversity sites (Sulu and Sulawesi Seas) among others. EAGA also boasts some of the best dive spots in the world. Tourist activities include diving, snorkeling, trekking, mountain climbing, game fishing, and other adventurous sports, and we can offer these in our region.

The delegates from Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia were impressed with our Sta. Cruz Island and will help promote it when they go back to their respective countries, they said in a press conference. As a matter of fact, DOT Asst. Sec. to Mindanao Art Boncato Jr., revealed that DOT will give Sta. Cruz a priority eco-tourism program and make it one of the must-visit tourist sites in the BIMP EAGA Area.

We should be grateful really to Director Bugante for putting Zamboanga City in the tourism loop of the BIMP EAGA Program. Since it was founded in March 24, 1994 (20 years ago), other areas of Mindanao were given priority over our city. There is now a rapid growth of development in trade, investment, and tourism in this part of Asia and our city should not be lagged behind.

You can find out too from our local DOT Tourism Office at Lantaka Hotel should you wish to visit Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia for your next abroad vacation itinerary.
