“As promised, I am here,” this is what Embassy Deputy Head Raoul Imbach, said to Zamboanga City Mayor Beng Climaco upon seeing her at the Cinematheque Zamboanga Theater last Friday, November 7, in Zamboanga City. He recalled when they met in Manila last year, wherein our good Mayor appealed to the diplomatic community to help our city recover from the 2013 siege, he committed to visit Zamboanga City someday.

And this was fulfilled when Ibach represented the European Union Delegation, the Ambassadors of the European Union Member States, Norway, and Switzerland to the official launching of the Cine Europa 17 in our city last week. This is the prestigious European Film Festival being held in the Philippines for the last 17 years. Thanks to the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), for the first time, our city was selected to be part of its nationwide run. The other chosen cities are Baguio, Iloilo, Davao, Cebu, Leyte, Tacloban, and Cagayan de Oro.

The general public was treated for free to watch different European films from November 4 to November 9 at the Cinematheque Zamboanga. The theme of the films were anchored about family life. Ibach was proud to share that the Swiss movie shown last Friday, L’emfant d’en haut (Sister), was shot in his hometown in Switzerland. It was about how poor people of his country survive for a living. Though the characters were talking in Swiss (with English sub-titles), you do get the hang of it after a while and get attach emotionally to the story of the movie.

Ibach was accompanied by FDCP Executive Director Teodoro Granados. Tedoro revealed to Pep Talk that there will be more film festivals coming in our city. Before the end of November, science films will be shown at Cinematheque Zamboanga.

Congratulations to Cinematheque Zamboanga Coordinator Jude Bello and projectionist Mark Bala for a good job handling the Cine Europa 17 well! Cinematheque Zamboanga is located at Veterans Avenue corner Legionnaire Road (across the main office of the LTO-Zamboanga and Barangay Hall of Zone 4). Special mention to Gerry Atilano and Marlon for their help.

Jeremiah 9:23-24 “This is what the LORD says: ‘Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches, but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,’ declares the LORD.”
