After its successful run of the European Film Festival, Cine Europa 17, last week, the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) will have again another round of week-long free film showing in our city for the first time. The Science Film Festival 2014 will be held at Cinematheque Zamboanga from November 25 to December 30 with the theme, “ Future Technologies,” a follow up of the 2013 theme, “Renewable Energy.”

This is the 5th time the Science Film Festival will be held in the Philippines. And thanks to FDCP, Zamboanga City is fortunate to be included as of the festival venues in our country. There will be 32 science movies to be shown separately to elementary, high school, and college students. The selected films will explain scientific concepts in an easy digestible and enjoyable form, providing schools and institutions a non-traditional medium to teach and learn science.

“After its founding in Bangkok 10 years ago, the Science Film Festival has gained more and more attention and success every year. The main goal is to give the younger generation access to science and awaken their interest and motivate them to pursue a career in this field,” Dr. Petra Raymond, Director of Goethe-Institute Philippines said. The festival is organized by Goethe Institute, a Germany Foundation, that promotes cross cultural science and art.

Among the partners of the festival are Mercedes-Benz, Department of Education (DepEd), Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Mind Museum, Museo Pambata, Manila Ocean Park, National Library, ASEAN Biodiversity, US Embassy, Phil. Science Centrum, Quezon Science Center, Felta, Ablan Foundation, Cornerstone, UP Deutscher Verein, Leyte Normal University, and German European School Manila.

Schools interested to bring their students as a group to view the Science Festival are advised to contact Jude Bello, Cinematheque Zamboanga coordinator, for schedule of viewing and reservation. Seats are limited with a seating capacity of only 180. Cinematheque Zamboanga is located at Veterans Avenue corner Legionnaire Street (fronting LTO Zamboanga).
