The contributions of Department of Education (DepEd)-Zamboanga City OIC Superintendent Pedro Melchor M. Natividad, fondly called Pete, were recognized by the Interreligious Solidarity Movement for Peace (IRSMO) for his outstanding involvement in projects and activities in the attainment of peace and harmony in Zamboanga City. He is one of the 3 awardees of the respectable and commendable Mindanao Peace Award for 2014.

The IRSMO through Peace Advocates Zamboanga (PAZ) awarded three outstanding individuals who made significant contributions to achieve peace in Mindanao this year. The awarding ceremony was held at Claret Gymnasium, Zamboanga City last November 30, 2014, in line with the celebration of Mindanao Week of Peace.

The other awardees were Sec. Jesse M. Robrero (posthumous), accepted by his wife Hon. Maria Leonor “Leni” Gerona Robredo and Uztadz Abdulquddus S. Jamad, Official Interpreter, Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF), Zamboanga Peninsula Regional Office N-A.

Natividad was lauded for his efforts in peace building and advocacy. His citation reads “Our awardee has made a name for himself as a champion of peace- building and advocacy. This he weaved by his consistent and sturdy support to peace education projects, especially those implemented by PAZ in over fifty (50) public secondary and elementary schools in the city. In the process many peace clubs and zones now exist in these schools, thousands of students have joined peace camps conducted in recent years; teachers have been trained in peace-making lessons and exemplar development and instructions. As a result, this singular collaboration has made Zamboanga City, too, a pilot center of peace education in the country”.

Natividad said, he is thankful to the Almighty and that he did not expect that his efforts in building peace and advocacy will be rewarded. The award will not only be his legacy but his inspiration to do better and more. What matter most is that the salient contributions he has done paved way to achieve peace came from the heart.

As superintendent of Zamboanga City Division, he has initiated and promoted the following programs that contributed much to the success for the cause of peace : The integration of peace modules in the lesson exemplars in all secondary & seven selected elementary schools - Rio Hondo E/S, Mariki E/S, Don Gregorio Elementary Memorial School (DGEMS), Sta. Barbara C/S, Tetuan C/S, Baliwasan C/S and Zambo Cental School.

Culture of peace seminar workshop cum planning in seven (7) elementary schools; Co-curricular activities on peace and stakeholders where barangay officials, teaching staff and their students came up with activities such as peace walk, seminar on Culture and Peace, slogan & poster making contest, hataw exercise for building physical well –being, laro ng lahi and the beautification of peace park.

LIZOP (Learning Institutions as Zone of Peace) - Sibuktok E/S, Langdang Gua Integrated School, Mampang E/S, Arena Blanco East and Landang Laum E/S; Hariraya na opisina is a celebration to understand each other’s culture; and Trauma Healing for teachers were few of the many activities initiated by the SDS in the division to promote the culture of peace.

He added that his success came with the help of many people in the division. Mrs. Janet Recamara was designated as the focal person to look into the different activities related to peace building and advocacy. She and the other coordinators in the district joined effort to further strengthen the involvement in working for peace.

Natividad served as inspiration to Zamboanga City Division in promoting peace in Mindanao. He envisioned having “heaven on earth”. (Text and pictures provided by Valeria Fides Corteza)
