Though I missed seeing Zamboanga City Mayor Beng Cimaco and our City Department Heads (had prior appointments – I was across in Guimaras Island), Pep Talk is eager to share to DZT readers that they went to Iloilo City for good reasons. I am in Iloilo now for my business consultancy and for the holidays with my family.

Pep Talk learned that Zamboanga’s Administration had a workshop, Strategic Planning Workshop of the City Department Heads, facilitated by the Development Academy of the Philippines in one of Iloilo City’s business hotels. The focus of discussion was on Mayor Beng’s SHE (Security, Health and Education) programs which are her priorities.

The group also paid a courtesy visit to Iloilo City Mayor Jed Mabilog who shared Iloilo’s best governance practices. He gave them a tour of the majestic City Hall and shown them the whole city from the building’s rooftop.

Pep Talk hopes that there will be a sisterhood between my two beloved cities (I was born in Iloilo City, Dad’s an Ilonggo, and I grew up in Zamboanga City, Mom’s a Zamboagueña) for economic and cultural ties. There are many successful Ilonggos in Zamboanga City, as well as, there are also many successful Zamboangueños in Iloilo City.

For now, it is very inconvenient to shuttle between these two cities. Either you fly via Manila, Cebu or Davao. Very expensive if one can’t avail the promo fare. There used to be a big ship that ferries passengers and cargoes between Zamboanga and Iloilo twice a week. But the shipping line closed down.

Pep Talk heard last year (not confirmed) that Cebu Pacific had a plan to fly between Iloilo and Zamboanga. But it went “kaput” after the Zamboanga City siege. Let’s hope that it will reconsider and study the economic prosperity and the advantages of it. Cagayan de Oro and Davao have direct flights to Iloilo and vice-versa both by PAL and Cebu Pacific.

Earlier this year, I had the privilege to visit Mayor Mabilog in behalf of Circulo ZICANAG (Zamboanga Ilonggo Circle from Iloilo, Capiz, Aklan, Negros Occidental, Antique, and Guimaras). As the association’s PIO, we invited Mayor Mabilog to be our guest speaker for our 2014 Christmas Party. It didn’t push thru due to conflict of schedules.

The good-nature Mayor Mabilog also was in for it when I expressed the two’s sisterhood agreement. I don’t know if this was discussed when he met Mayor Beng.

Maayo tani, bueno era (It would be a good thing) for both cities.
