The heat is on! After a long wait, the Miss Iloilo Dinagyang Festival 2015 will be crowned on Wednesday, January 21, at the University of San Agustin, Iloilo City. This is the most prestigious beauty search in Western Visayas. The search for Miss Dinagyang candidates takes months.

Though I get the privilege to be a judge in beauty contests sometimes, personally, this kind of event is not included in the priority coverage of Pep Talk. It belongs to the turf of Social Whirl.

But since I am in my birth place, Iloilo City, and will be a witness to the week-long celebration of Dinagyang 2015, the Philippine’s Queen of Festival, one of my attention was drawn to the search for the most beautiful Ilongga of the year - Miss Iloilo Dinagyang.  It is not only one of the highlights of the city’s annual festivity; it is being really being done earnestly by the city government and taken seriously by different private multi-national and local business sectors.

Miss Dinagyang has an important role in the society – she becomes an inspiration to others –the epitome of a true beauty queen.  Applicants have to pass stringent interviews and criteria of the search committee. The title holder does not only receive fabulous prizes, she even the other candidates are being treated well, highly admired, respected, and given perks that real beauty queens deserve.

For 2015, 10 finalists composed of professionals and students were presented to the public last October 5, 2014. They were trained for almost 4 months the proper manners and conducts of a beauty queen. They are exposed to different functions (from human charities to corporate visits) to make them more confident about themselves.  Girls of questionable backgrounds and morals are disqualified. Being a Miss Dinagyang contestant is almost synonymous of being a winner already.  All of the candidates are lovely, gorgeous, witty, and intelligent.

Prominent Ilonggo fashion designer Alex Gonzales Soncio is the overall chairman for the Miss Iloilo Dinagyang 2015.

Filipinos are generally crazy about beauty contests. There are dime of dozens of such contents in almost every nook and corners of our country - from barangays to schools, offices, private and government organizations. Unfortunately, there are some beauty contests that take advantages of the candidates. Prizes are not big enough to compensate the contestant’s expenses from wardrobes to make-up. Worse, some take sexually advantages of the candidates with a promise to make her (or him, in the case of a male beauty contest) win.

It used to be also all the candidates belong to the same religious sect. Now, even some of the conservative religious sects seemingly tolerate their members to join.

A former Miss Zamboanga City title holder shared that winners of Miss Zamboanga City in the distant past automatically become Binibining Pilipinas candidates. She also said the local government during her time has a budget for all qualified candidates. All they have to do is show their beauty, poise and intelligence. Those were the glorious beauty days of Zamboanga City.
