Pep Talk is glad to learn that ADZU (Ateneo de Zamboanga University) Fr. Jose T. Bacatan SJ Library in coordination and support of the American Corner successfully conducted  the 1st American Corner Inter-school Quiz Bowl last January 23, 2014. It was held at the university’s Carlos Dominguez Conference Hall, LRC Building.

Only three schools participated, namely Ateneo de Zamboanga University High School, Claret High School, and Saint Joseph High School. Nevertheless this is a good start of competing students from different school not to put each other down or know who is the brightest, but to boost up their confidence and knowledge.

The winners were Mikka Ella L. Sebastian from Claret School (Champion), Jester Estudillo from ADZU High School (2nd place) and Debbora Despalo also from Claret School (3rd place). American Corner is part of the library services offered by the USA thru ADZU. Latest books, magazines, journals, and internet connections is being offered. It is open and free for the general public.

Pep Talk remembers that during his high school days, a similar quiz bowl contest was being at the defunct FUBC a local TV station. Another competition was the Nutri-Quiz.  Both contests had weekly and monthly elimination until only two school teams are left to be declared the champion for that year. It gave opportunities for bright students of different schools to know each other and be friends. It makes  the students proud too as they become popular, at the same time, bring home cash prizes.

Congrats to ADZU Library for this noteworthy program! Hope it can be done again with more school participants in the next round.
