RCZC unveils charter marker

63 year old Rotary Club of Zamboanga City (RCZC) unveiled its charter marker at the Zamboanga City Hall last June 9, 2011 that has produced 5 Rotary District Governors for Rotary International District 8850. Mounted in the wall outside between main city hall and annex buildings, it honored the charter officers and members led by former Zamboanga City Mayor Nicasio Valderrosa as charter president.

RCZC was founded in March , 1948 in this city. Since then, the club has continually been enjoying doing laudable community services. It is fondly referred to as the Mother Club because it spawned 9 different Rotary Clubs in and outside of Asia’s Latin City with more than 500 members. It’s existence is marked with historical importance in the annals of Rotary history - it is the 11th oldest club in the country, the 1st in Western Mindanao, the 2nd in Mindanao, and the 3rd club under Rotary District (RI) 3850.

Multi-awardee RCZC has also produced some of the exemplary leaders in the government and private sectors. With its leadership training, it has developed men and women (thru its Rotary Anns of Zamboanga City) who are successful in their chosen careers and respective businesses. RCZC current president Sixto “Jun” Kwan said that the club charter marker will remind and inspires Rotarians as well as other people to serve their people who are in need and be pro-active in community services.

If you happen to pass by, try to see and read who the original members of the RCZC charter club are. And it is remarkable to note that most descendants of these charter members are still active in community services and are still maintaining the good name of their family. I can surmise that once a Rotarian always a Rotarian. Rotary slogan “Service Above Self” runs in the blood of a Rotarian and his/her descendants.

Special guest in the unveiling ceremony were Zamboanga City Mayor Celso Lobregat and the granddaughter of the late Mayor Valderrosa City – City Councilor Myra Valderrosa-Abubakar.
